Anyone else? Fairly sure it's international bandwidth, however the graphs show nothing out of the ordinary. YouTube and eBay are especially slow, and won't even load sometimes. Images are terrible as well. 1500/256

Was just about to post a new thread about this. My web browsing speeds are in the toilet in the moment – both local and international. I'm on Brisbane northside, ADSL1 1500/256. I just rebooted the modem and it's syncing at 1536/256 so that's not the issue. Getting the following speed test results -

Test Results from Oz Broadband Speed Test

Test Results from Oz Broadband Speed Test

Test run on 22/07/2008 @ 06:08 PM

Your line speed is 35 kbps (0.04 Mbps).
Your download speed is 4 KB/s (0 MB/s).

Test Results from Oz Broadband Speed Test
----------------------------------
Test run on 22/07/2008 @ 06:39 PM

Mirror: Verizon
Data: 70 KB
Test Time: 63.08 secs

Your line speed is 9 kbps (0.01 Mbps).
Your download speed is 1 KB/s (0 MB/s).

The Telstra and Internode ones are acceptable, but trying to load a webpage, even local ones like Whirlpool, takes an age. The Optus speed test mirrors all seem to be virtually dead, so I'm wondering if there's an Optus problem. International mirror is also essentially dead. I didn't have any issues from the Optus outage the other day and speeds were no worse than usual last night.

Remember management opened the P2P floodgates earlier today when the blockage on trackers was lifted. Slow general speeds may result until everyone has caught up on a missed week of linux iso

I am on 8000 connection as well and its slow as on the Gold Coast. Had the telstra guy out today as I have a really slow connection sometimes and he checked it out for me. One thing that have come up is the rim/dslam here has been shaped back to a max of 3000k by telstra due to congestion so I have been paying exetel for 8000k when the best I could do is 3000k. Telstra offered me an 8000k connection last week and didn't mention anything about the local rim/dslam being shaped to 3000k either. Not happy Jan about paying for a service I cant gat and for those telstra bugga's to be to cheap to upgrade my rim/dslam so all the customers in this estate can get fair service. I will have to ring them both tomorrow to sort it out.

Has anyone else tried to go to the telco ombudsman for help or is he in Telstra's pocket??

Seems like it might be improving as of about 1.30am. Have been trying to do a speed test using the Verizon international mirror since about 11.30pm but it kept timing out. All of a sudden it suddenly started working, albeit at about a third of my max speed. Certainly a drastic improvement though -

No different here between peak and off peak times lately – it's slow ALL the time seems to be happening more and more often that it's pretty well normal now just to be always slow,

some web pages require a couple of refreshes to help them completely finish else they just seem to hang forever.

Hrmmm....It was OK this morning and this afternoon, but it has progressively been getting worse this evening. It's not quite at the level it was yesterday, but if that was a result of them screwing with the Qld PoP then I wouldn't be surprised if we are in for a repeat performance – probably for the next week as they try to figure out WTF is going on. It would be nice if they'd sent us an email to warn us in advance.....

Exetel are a ISP that you pay for what you get and after comming from another provider recently you really wish you had'nt bothered chosing Exetel just to save a few bucks.

The frustation caused by slow speeds peak and offpeak and constantly double checking your own system for issues is'nt worth it in the end.

Glad I DID choose Exetel, extremely good value for money.

So they have 1 slow day, big deal, I have a life, can do other things when they have a bad day. Exetel has worked fine for me in that month apart from Tuesday which was slow. Everything was fine day after, (Wednesday) and all good today (Thursday)

Exetel works for me too... when it works!

It's when the 1 slow day turns into 2,3,4 ... days, then a week of yo-yo patchyness. I too have a life (am about to go to work so I can eat/pay bills) but when I come home at night I want to be able to enjoy my couple of hours internet time (gaming/browsing etc) that I have paid for without having to sit here and wait for responses for page requests that take forever or simply time out. I'd like to be able to play UT without getting lagged out by high pings.

Get used to it – it's the norm at Exetel, people who have been with Exetel for ages don't know any difference but if you've just recently churned thats when you really notice the difference with everything slower and/or laggy, i noticed immediately after my churn went through downloads, torrents, Usenet all slower than before or one day is good and next is crap or it's good in the morning and crap in the afternoon or visa versa, i wish i'd done more research than just going for a cheap ISP to save a few bucks before churning.

I watched someone yesterday download to 100% completion a 350 MB torrent on my client that was using ISP Dodo in around half an hour, he/she started after me, it took me 5 hours to download the same torrent on Exetel as i was only able to download at 25kbs max most probably because of Exetel's P2P shaping/deprioritization, i don't even know if the PSP cache exists i've never been able to utilize it.
I used to be able to download at around 160kbs 24/7 with the exception of poorly seeded old torrents before comming to Exetel even when i was with Optus but i certainly have'nt been able to since.

You get what you pay for with Exetel.

Reminds me of the days back in the 90's on 14.4 or 28.8k dialup when you count'nt connect to your ISP in the evening and it took 30 or more redials to get through when finally someone else had logged off and free'd up a line and when you did connect it was so painfully slow you virtually could'nt do anything anyway.

I've been on ADSL since it's inception 8 odd years ago or more and churning to Exetel today is like going back to those old days.

Sounds very much like you're being shaped in the peak period. I'm certainly having no problems in either period.

When you churned, did you choose the option to be shaped in the peak period???

In over three years, I have only ever experienced slow speeds on a single occasion lasting for about 14 hours.

It turned out to be the Telstra techs mucking around in my local exchange.

or is this just a once in a while problem that you expect to have with whoever you are with.

Like I said, I'm not experiencing any problems atm. I suspect that at least some of those who are complaining are actually shaped, and their connections will return to normal at the beginning of the new month.

It's safe to say your profile is correct being in Sydney then?

For the users not in NSW, a simple look at Exetels network diagram can explain for the most part the poor speeds other states are experiencing.

Well i have a Exetel connection in Newcastle, and one in northern NSW. Both work fine. It would seem those experiencing slow speeds are people outside of NSW. The graph i provided above clearly advertised the fact that NSW has the most bandwidth available.

Whether this is because NSW has the most users is unknown to us outside of Exetel management and staff however, the symptoms most users demonstrate would point to an obvious lack of bandwidth flowing into states outside NSW.

So, whilst you and i have solid connections, the problems experienced by others are still very true and valid. It would be great it everybody could keep this in mind for the future.

My issue with speed with Exetel is it is so variable – more than i've ever experienced with 5 other ISPs over 6 years on the same ADSL speed i've always had.

One day can be good the next crap or it's good in the morning and crap in the arvo or visa versa it just does'nt seem constant for days or weeks that i got used prior to comming to Exetel from a more expensive ISP before where speed was never a issue my experience is that you have to pay a little more to get a more consistant speed for a given plan.

I can get up in the morning as it's as fast as and i think what i am i complaining about, it's even still on offpeak time but latter on be it 11:00 or 2:00 in the arvo everything slooowwss does down and then i start checking my own system/running processes etc... to see what's causing it, even rebooting my computer a number of times that i've never had to do before Exetel, i could remain connected for a month with no speed issues ever before now.

For years i've used Newsleecher through Astraweb for the Usenet and it always downloaded at my max ADSL 1 connection speed of around 160 to 165kbs but since comming to Exetel the speed now averages around 80 to 120kbs with it sometimes on peaking higher to 140kbs but more often staying around 80 to 90kbs constantly for the entire download which results in the given file of a simular size taking twice as long to receive as what it used to anywhere else.

No – i'm not shaped nor using any other conflicting bandwidth programs just the browser open and the Usenet client running.

Ummm, you might have missed the bit where I said "I'd be interested in seeing the evidence you are using to support them."

You also may have missed the fact that I was referring to your claims of " an obvious lack of bandwidth flowing into states outside NSW."

FYI, a few grumbling posts on a forum (whether justified or not) do not constitute proof of a lack of bandwidth to any particular area.

And you'd have to be very naive indeed if you thought that those of us who are not experiencing any problems, were of the belief that those who did, were faking or lieing about their various speed issues.

In other words (just in case you still don't get it), just because there are people on this forum who are not experiencing speed issues, does not mean that we don't recognise the fact that some other users are experiencing speed issues.

Every little bit of feedback whether positive or negative helps to isolate and diagnose where and what any issues may be.

And finally, I'd love you to point me to any post on Whirlpool where an Exetel user has dissed another Exetel user who was experiencing speed issues, by using the words "U R STUPID" or anything vaguely like it.

As far as I can see, you are the only person here who has said anything like that.

Hey all

Just wondering if my speeds are slow.

I've got a Billion 7402, and on Naked DSL.

Modem stats:

D/Stream :
Speed: 19.08 Mbps
Output Power: 0 dBm
S/N Ratio: 11.5 dB
Attenuation: 9.5 dB

U/Stream:
Speed: 812 Kbps
Output Power: 14.5 dBm
S/N Ratio: 14.5 dB
Attenuation:4 dB

and here's the results of a speed test:

Your download speed is 820 KB/s (0.8 MB/s).

Should be getting a fair bit faster than this shouldn't I? Nothing else was running during the speed test....

Is there an Exetel speed test I can use, eg d/load a file from their website?

Thanks guys, any help appreciated.

You could potentially get 3 times faster. If I was on ADSL2 and syncing at 19mbps I'd expect to see at least a consistent 10mbps minimum speed from the ISP's own servers.

You already were testing from an Exetel server. ozspeedtest uses heaps of ISP mirrors and defaults to your current ISP's.

And here's my speed test from this morning.

Unimpressive. Sync speed is around 4.5MBPS (one day I really should check that again, but it's such a pain when the modem's in bridge mode)

Only things you can really do are:

  • TCP Receive Window size change on client PCs (Vista doesn't need that though)
  • Make sure you aren't running any content filters that will be slowing things down (firewalls are OK).
  • Make sure there's no other background processes using your bandwidth while doing the speed test... Torrents, downloads of updates, etc. They'll all make your speed test come out at somewhat lower if they are going at decent speeds themselves.
