Instructions for Jailbreaking your iPhone 3G ONLY on Windows (tested on Vista, but should work the same on XP)
================================================== ===

MAKE SURE YOU HAVE A BACKUP OF YOUR PHONE

1. You need to download two files:
x12220000_4_Recovery.ipsw and iPhone1,2_2.0_5A347_Custom_Restore.ipsw. You can get both of them over here:

http://users.on.net/thevillage/pwnage/win/

2. Make sure you have itunes 7.7 installed.

for vista: Click start then copy this into the search box and press enter after:
for XP: click start then run, then copy this into the run box:

Code:

%appdata%\Apple Computer\iTunes

3. Make a directory callled: Device Support

If it already exists, clear it.

4. copy x12220000_4_Recovery.ipsw into the Device Support folder you just created.

5. ok, you need to get your device into DFU mode. watch this video to see how:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fiTcKMZfyfk

6. Once your phone is in DFU mode and detected by iTunes (should be black screen on phone NOT itunes logo with usb cable), click on iphone in itunes, then hold the SHIFT key and click on restore.

7. Browse to the folder where you downloaded iPhone1,2_2.0_5A347_Custom_Restore.ipsw and select it. itunes will then extract the file and you will see the ipod dev team's pinapple logo pop up after a few seonds, like this:

http://imagestore.ugbox.net/image/DSC05615_2f8d86f3441a5e6f46cfd81.jpg

8. when restoring has completed, it will ask you to connect to itunes, then re-do the activation process (download carrier settings)

9. Restore your backup! this should automatically be made. it should pop up right after downloading carrier settings, but you may also do it by right clicking your iphone on the left, and selecting "restore iphone"

10. That's it, you're done!

Disclaimer: I am not responsible if any of this bricks your phone. i have tried it myself and with another OCAU member and it has been fine, but THIS IS AT YOUR OWN RISK

I didn't use the firmware on the site, i used a custom one i got earlier maybe that's why?

I'll report back once my backup finishes

Might try it with the other firmware just to safe

maybe. this firmware image was patched by me using Pwnage 2.0 on my mac. the other 35kb file is required to stop getting 6000 errors when restoring.

I would always recommend letting these modifications run their course for a week or so to allow patch updates and let other people brick their devices. Cydia currently has almost nothing in the way of 3rd party applications at this point so I would suggest holding out a little bit rather than blowing 1k

Is there any word if installer is coming to 2.0?

SKANSIN: http://blog.iphone-dev.org/

Update 1: Just to clear up some confusion over what this actually does: yes, it jailbreaks and
"""unlocks older iPhones"""", and
"""""jailbreaks iPhone 3Gs"""" and iPod Touches. We only support the 2.0 firmwares.

ure screwed read b4 u do things...sry wait untill its out

they will not unlock the 3G iphones yet.
This softwear is only the OS "custome firmware"
NOT AN UNLOCKER ...as -Springah- posted 2 post b4 u :)
unlock is the same as activate... no activating yet..

I am not sure.....but I think you can only activate the phone with a USIM installed....until then it is pretty much just an iPod Touch.......although you may not be able to transfer any music etc to it.

iPhone 2.0 Upgrade Steps for 2G iPhones ACCIDENTALLY Upgraded to 2.0 already.

Follow and check all steps and all will work.

=== Pre-upgrade Checks ===
1. Restore your iPhone with the Original & Official Apple iphone 2.0 software.
2. Phone will be "emergency" only status.

=== Device Support Folder === (2.0.1 should solve this but check it anyway :) )
1. Open Finder
2. Goto "Mac HD"
3. Goto "Library" and then to "Itunes"
4. If "Device Support" EXISTS – open folder and delete everything in there.
5. If "Device Support" folder doesn't exist – create a new folder called "Device Support"

=== Download Bootloaders ===
1. You need both 3.9 and 4.6 (available via 100s of links on this page – particularly at the top)

=== Upgrade Steps ===
1. Open up the pwned 2.0
2. Goto EXPERT MODE – if you use simple mode you will get errors 6, 20, 1600, 1601 etc and it will NOT work
3. Select the 2.0 firmware and also select relevant *.bins
4. When get to main menu screen, go into Bootnetuer and select "Update Bootloader" and select "4.6"
5. Go back to main menu and enter General Settings --> select Enable Baseband Update
6. Then build the firmware and save it to your desktop
7. Once the firmware is built, pwned will ask you to plug in your iphone via USB.
8. It will then step you through the process of enter DFU mode
9. Once this is complete it will ask you to boot up itunes (when you plugged you phone in it may have already loaded)
10. Hold down ALT (on MAC) and select the firmware on your desktop
11. iPhone will update – LEAVE IT for the entire process.
12. It should install and all will work :)

=== If DFU Fails ===
1. Plug iPhone into USB & then TURN OFF (connected obviously :P)
2. Hold the power and home buttons at the same time for 10 secs
3. Release power button and continue holding home button
4. iTunes will recognize the phone in "Restore Mode"
5. Hit "Option/ALT" key and click restore.
6. Select the firmware on your desktop
7. Await 2.0 love (feel free to drink a beer at this point)

Hope this is all clear enough for everyone :)

Frederick!

Just a quck question.

I have downloaded the 2 files but they are zip files.

Do I need to change the extension to ipsw ?

You have to redownload. When I downloaded at first the bigger file was zip too. But what you need to do is downloan the file that is zip and when it asks you to save it you need to save as "all files" not save as zip. good luck (or what i read above is that you can use safari (on you PC, you have to download it) and when you save through safari it should automatically save as the ipsw extension.

the only file in x12220000_4_Recovery "ziped" is a release.dfu file....?
OK YEA USE SAFARI TO DOWNLOAD IT
OR RENAME THE .ZIP

it wont ask for a file after i hit restore???

Hi all jailbreakers !
Yesterday I tried to jailbreak my 3g with the 2 files on my dell laptop/vista.
I was horrified to obtain "error 1601". Anyway I stand zen, and could find on the web that some people obtained a solution.
I choosed to disconnect from usb, put away the sim card, and finally press
the menu and on/off buttons simultaneously...---->after some 20/30 seconds, a white apple appeared on the screen. I released the two buttons. My 3g had rebooted in my original datas/settings... OUF!!!!
This morning I made a new try, but it was on my PC at work, with XP, AND it was a success !!! I now have a pineapple on the boot.
THANKS for that special win method.
What was going on yesterday.....DONT KNOW, but dont systematically despair if you have to do with "error 1601" !!!!

Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't unlocking free on Optus if you're on a contract? (ie not prepaid)

But yeah, as of right now, jailbreaking doesn't touch the simlock on 3G iPhones, its solely for 3rd party apps.

If you have Optus unlock your phone for you (which is $80 for prepaid customers at least), then yes, you can use any SIM you like. You don't need to jailbreak.

No. Your bootloader icon will change, there'll be a Cydia app added to your phone which installs 3rd party packages, and you'll lose all your music/ringtones (but not photos/contacts/apps) during the process, but other than that you're fine.

sorry for the relentless questions ..

what about the itunes store and application on the iPhone .. I can still use that? .. and the application I've downloaded and pay for, will I lose the ability to use any of them?

Another question. As u say, this is actually for the iphone 3G. So in other words, what i am doing is downgrading its firmware from 2.0 to 1.1.4. Am i right in saying this? Also, I have an ipod touch 1.1.2. What do i do? Do i click update to 1.1.4 before movng on to jailbreak it with the methods u have stated?

Yes this is for the Iphone 3G, No it isn't downgrading the firmware it is installing a cracked version of the 2.0 firmware, this has nothing to do with 1.1.4

As for the touch i can't comment on it, as i only have an iphone

So if lets say i go through these steps of jailbreaking the iphone, and it bricks... Where do i retrieve this backup of the iphone that i have made? Or what do i do?

I have no idea how to unbrick it... The backup is used to restore your phone after it has been jailbroken as the phone is wiped clean

Nope leave the simcard in there, also leave it connected to the computer with itunes during the whole process, once the phone is jailbroken it will need to be activated again with itunes so the sim will be required.

EDIT II: 3G just magically came back to life for no apparent reason. Maybe it was the Optus tower??! (00:21 WST July 22)

Bit of an update since pwning this morning.

re: the crashes and problems with Cydia — had that too. Some worked but many would just crash part way through the download. In the end I got openssl + openssh installed with a download resume (after numerous hard reboots) over HSDPA (3G) rather than wifi, but that could well just be coincidence. Does seem to be happening to others too; I posted a tentative ticket at telesphoreo.

But now something pretty disturbing has happened: I have no 3G signal! If I turn off wifi, I get nothing in place of that icon, and internet access fails saying no connection (eg, safari). If I turn off 3G itself and drop back to GPRS the GPRS icon appears and I can get (very slow) net access.

I've rebooted and rolled back any Cydia apps I installed after the last time I had 3G working, but so far she won't come back up. Could be a coincidence of course; maybe my local Optus 3G tower is having a glitch. But seems unlikely.

Will give it overnight I guess but then, with great regret, will have to roll back to Apple fw.

Anyone else seeing this??

***
EDIT: decided to do a SHIFT+restore of the pwnd fw (+ restore from backup taken immediately prior) to see what difference that makes. As I dimly perceived it, I should have just rolled back to the original pwnd version, minus any modifications I might have made via Cydia. Process worked smoothly.

And 3G was: not resurrected. Guess I wait overnight and then likely wipe the lot. :|

yeah you then keep hold of the 2 buttons slide the slider to turn it off itll then show the loading circle for a second or 2 then the screen will go black.

let go of the power button and keep hold of the home button until Itunes recognises the Iphone needs recovery.

then your set to go.

i though recovery mode and DFU are completely different. cauce in recovery mode ther's a loge with a usb cable and the itune logo.

But when i tried to restore i get erro #5. I tried it 2 already and the same error. i even tried using Itune 7.5 but still getting error #5.

yes they are different but doing what i said above will give you a flat black screen nothing on it at all.

you should also be using itunes 7.7

First of all let me say thanks for taking the time to provide this for us.

I got an iPhone 3G and was able to jailbreak it with this method.
Everything is working fine except I'm having a slight issue.

1)Voicemail doesn't seem to be working (when I hit voicemail, it doesn't do anything)

2)When I'm not on wifi I get an E icon. Now I never owned the first iPhone, but isn't that the old icon for "Edge"? Does that mean I'm somehow using Edge instead, or is it still 3G but has an old icon? In which case, why is this occurring?

Thanks.

Unless you've installed one of the icon customisation packs in Sydia, your 3G icon should not have changed. Have you made sure 3G is actually turned on under Settings...General...Network?

I have 3G On/Enable under network settings.

As for customization, the only Sydia installations I have done are:
-OpenSSH
-Replace the battery charger image.

I will delete/remove these and see what happens.

Sorry for the double post however, I can't edit my post to update my status.

I deleted both of them and still no difference.

I'm thinking of doing a restore.

If I connect my iPhone, go to itunes and do a restore would do return it to factory settings? to backup settings?

Furthermore, if these settings have been copied already in the backup wouldn't they just transfer over if I restore from a back up?

My 3g is jailbroken with cydia and a nes emulator.

So far the only issue I've come across is the inability to set my wallpaper? it's always the default green battery.

anyone else have this issue?

That is a possibility...
Maybe total coincidence, but I'm getting almost no bars (signal) at all after I JB it. I'm considering a restore at the moment but might have to wait for tomorrow as it takes some time.

Note: I've never done a restore (other than when I JB it) but I'm guessing it deletes all your music/videos etc. so it will take quite a while to re-upload to my iPhone, so I'm dreading it quite a bit hehe.

It allows you to install whatever you want on your phone, not just Apple-sanctioned apps from the iTunes store. Right now it doesn't mean much if you're not a developer (you've got a NES emulator, and that's it) but give it a few weeks and you'll see a bunch of apps that'll likely never make it onto the App Store for one reason on another.

One example for the old version of the iPhone was Fring — a VoIP application allowing you to make cheap calls on your iPhone over Wifi and not giving all your money to the phone company.

In the future you'll also be able to unlock the iPhone for free.

No. For Real. You should be happy you have that logo, I can't get it on mine (I must be doing something wrong) which means that I can't/am-not jailbreaking correctly. So just be happy you jailbroke successfully and you are getting the correct logo and everything is working right. Stop being so picky. Enjoy.

Hi Romulin101

I am not happy with this Logo and it would great, if i can repace it with the original one.
The Jailbreak worked for me only with this Window Solution, on the Mac it didnt worked.
I hope you get it worked....
But nevertheless, i like to have the original Logo from Apple.
Can anyone tell me please, how i can change the Pinnaple Logo back to the original one?
If i dont get any Solution for this, i Unfortunately, need to Restore my iPhone back to the original 2.0 Firmware.

It would be nice, if i can get a Solution.

Thanks in Advance

Greetings, derenko

"derenko" thats a joke right?
You telling me you are willing/prefer to go back to an un-jailbroken iPhone because you want the original apple logo? A logo you barely ever see unless you turn off/on your phone.

If you truly willing to do that, then in my honest opinion, having a JB isn't for you. If you can't see the importance, the magnitude, and the sheer power of having a JB phone then you shouldn't hack your phone. To even say such a thing is almost disrespectful to the dev-team and hackers everywhere.

Note: You can change that logo however, I'm not wasting my time, nor do I think the rest of the guys here are. Learn to appreciate things that are given to you.

Guys, where is the Problem?
If i use PNWAGE Tool, i can disable the Pinnaple Logo in the Expert Mode, so the Pinnaple Logo will not appear.
I used the Windows Solution, because i dont have a Mac. And with this Solution there is not an opion to disable the Pinnaple Logo.
Therefore i like to Change it now.

What is the difference, if i disable the Pinnaple Logo in the Expert Mode of pwnage Tool or now afterwards?

I am thinking about jailbreaking my iPhone 3g (TMobile, Germany).

As of that, I would like to know if and how I could revert my iPhone back to non-jailbroken state after it has once been broken. Will a usual "restore" through iTunes (with the original firmware from apple) work therefore?

Another question bothering me at the moment: Will my iPhone still function with my TMobile sim card? I am asking this because I haven't explicitly heard about a broken TMobile/Germany iPhone. – TMobile is the official reseller of iPhones in Germany, so I should not need any unlocking for my iPhone, is that correct?

Thanks for your help :-)
