Hey guys...

I live in Bull Creek, WA and my exchange is Batemen. I was previoiusly with iiNet ADSL2+, until recently change to a Amnet ADSL 2+ connection.

Now, i occasionally get frequent disconnections from the net, with my iiBelkin F1PI241EGau receiving the message:
[No response from ISP\ Incorrect Password or Username].

The only way i can fix this problem is by manually switching off the power and turning it back on (restarting it) I am fairly certain that the disconnections are not a result of incorrect password or user name. The dropouts seem to be totally random.

The reliability of the net is quite important to me, as my family always uses the VoiP phone.

So my question is: Are my dropouts a result of a bad port\exchange? or because of my iiBelkin? Also, does anyone else live in the Bateman area who also experiences this? Finally does anyone have a iiBelkin and experience the same problem??

Any solutions guys?

Love to hear from you

Cheers guys

Ring the Amnet Support number and tell them your problem. They can configure the DSLAM while you are on the line. They fixed a similar problem I had that way.

"You can contact our Customer Care team between the hours of 6am-10pm (WST) Weekdays, and 8am-8pm (WST) Weekends and Public Holidays on 1300 88 22 32 or "

Hi b3y0nd
I live in Canning Vale (just down the road) and am on on Amnet dslam. Our connection is pretty bad and it seems to change daily.

At first when we were on a TW port we had a nice connection (like 5mbps down) but since we got churned to Amnet's dslam its been huge drop outs and after a few days of no router reboot our connection can not download anything faster than about 40~45kbps. Thats running the speed test from Amcom's toolbox.

I have used a speedtouch 536i, a Billion 7404vgp (3 of these modems), a Netcom VOIP Gateway (think its the NB5+) and even a cisco modem/router (from memory).

Every modem does the same thing, just some are worse than others. The BEST was the cisco, then the speed touch. The billions just hate our line.

I have rang Customer support (i forget how many times now) and have spent alot of time talking to Kelly (before he left) to get this fixed but it seems that Amcom cant fix it. Kelly actually managed to get me onto a different port because he said our first port was broken.

Currently we're speed limited to 4mbps/512kbps which is fine, but we still get alot of drop outs. Customer support have done so many things, changing profiles, setting adsl1,2 and 2+ profiles have done nothing but lower sync speed, but we still have the issues.

Currently sync'd at 3.3mbps (this is down like over 2mbps from when we were on a TW port) and have over 21000 CRC errors and we reset the modem this morning.

I know this doesnt help you, but I have been trying for about 18 months to get it fixed, I have about 10 different case numbers, and I just give up! The only thing I havent done is get the house rewired, which I am working on :)

Sorry for such a long post, good luck trying to fix your problem! I dont think you will fix it :P

Hey Stan,

thanks for the reply, sorry to hear about your fruitless efforts. Maybe time for a new ISP?
lol

anyway with all serious, what i dont really understand is that why i was fine on an iiNet DSLAM, but get dodgy connection when im with Amnet?

Ill try the the customer support when i get time. See if i can fix both our problems ;)

Cheers

It could be a silly little incompatibility between your modem and the Amnet DSLAMs.

Are you able to try another brand/model of modem?

I had a friend with a similar router having a similar problem a couple of weeks ago. The problem was that the patch cord between the wall socket and modem ADSL port had parallel conductors and was too long. The limit is about 2m for this type of cable.

Changing to twisted pair in his case fixed the problem completely.

I have a Juniper 5GT ADSL router that I was given, so I might give that a go later tonight. Only issue with that is it doesnt support VOIP or have Wireless.

Why are the Amnet dslam's so picky about what modem connects to them?

*edit*
ok I setup the Juniper and it seems to be working ok so far. I am still using my billion but only for voip and dhcp. The juniper only downloads at 3.1mbps and uploads at 400kbps, where the billion would always download at 4.1mbps and upload at 500kbps (both tests done through speedtest.net).

So the Juniper is slower, but it might be more stable.
Anyway, heres to testing!

Stan a lot of people use Billion 7404 series modems. Sounds like you have a shitty line to have been through so many modems with such poor success.

I use Billion 7404VGO's at a number of sites:
Adelaide – Grenfell Street
Tuart Hill
Vic Park
Bulwer
Nedlands

All exchanges with great success.

Hey guys...

Thanks for the feedback, and possible reasons for my dodgy net. Ill try all the solutions when i get round to it.

I received this email on Monday, 21/7/08. This is what it said:

Emergency Outage Notice for your DSL Service
We wish to advise you that we will be carrying out emergency maintenance and updates on our Bateman exchange equipment, which services your ADSL connection, between 10:30pm and 1:00am on Monday 21st July, 2008.

These updates are necessary to ensure continued reliability and performance of your DSL service.

Ive received numerous of these since january, when i first connected. A bit too many in my mind.... something suss???

What do you guys reckon?

Yeah mate I think your pretty much on the money, but this only started happening when I got moved to a Amcom port. Stuffs me, Im at the I dont care stage :P

One of the guys I work with said that he would rewire the phone's in our house for me :P Its just that he lives way up north and I live south. He's a qualified sparky with all the right licenses and stuff, so one day we'll get around to doing that :)

But you are right with the Billion, I know 6 people in Perth that use s 7404vgp/vgo on amcom enabled dslams and they dont have any problems either. I still blame Amcom's dslam not liking my billion :P Maybe I should RMA the router before it hits 3 years old....

Hello B3y0nd,

The problem you are experiencing is more then likely a line issue.

The notifications you receive are due to fibre works that occur throughout our network, on occasions we require to take offline certain exchange locations as we expand the Amcom Metro Ethernet Network, due to the upgrading of equipment, and actual upgrades to fibre infrastructure. We are also currently installing additional port capacity at most exchange locations.

Please ensure you have called our customer service support line on 1300 88 22 32, or whim me your case number you have raised and I will ensure the case is looked into by our Level 2 Customer support team.

Regards,

- Matthew Murray

I would much rather be receiving outage notifications when there is going to be a planned outage, rather than the internet connection just going off.

From what Matthew Murray said, it looks like they are not outages that are related to an issue with the Bateman DSLAM, more likely that they are due to Amcom expanding their fibre network. I guess if they need to cut into the fibre run that services Bateman (to add other customers), they would need to take Bateman DSLAM offline.

Yeah, you might be getting a few of these, but how much *actual* downtime have you noticed, and has affected your internet usage?

It's those unscheduled ones you need to worry about :D
