Then you have a problem other than the one here.

AANET – Please investigate ASAP!

Have you reported it to them, or tried the support forum?

Same here...AGAIN.

AANET – your broadband service is pretty good but your email service sucks. Over recent months there has been far too many problems.

From the AAnet forum

"There currently seems to be a mail server outage.

If you need to send mail, the smtp service on mail.eftel.com still works"

A good question that's for sure

The server upgrade was supposed to fix everything.

Surely there aren't any more excuses left that aaNet could use for email problems !!

LOL, ain't that the truth.
I'me glad I done my homework on Aanet, with all the past mail server problems I thought it would be a good idea to open an email account through google, just in case this kept on happening.
Looks like it was a good idea.

A few months ago when there was issues with email, the mail server was to be replaced with a load balanced redundancy system (even being replicated to a 2nd Data Centre).

Load Balance – failed?
Redundacy – failed?
Replicated Data Centre – failed?

I've suffered bizarre browsing too!!! SLLOOOOOWWWW. As always I'll give them the benefit of fixing it before logging a ticket. 'cause everytime you mention a problem you get: Have you logged a support ticket.....:-( so for the record no...but I will :-) if it makes people happy

So it would seem. You gotta be careful around those backhoe operators....

Thing is, the webspace still works, and I had thought that was meant to be the "other" system. Seems like the switchover failed

Yep, just now, series of errors trying to connect to the mail server.

Usual message "Error connecting etc. The connection was refused"...

Hadn't changed anything since I last retrieved mail yesterday.

Luckily Gmail works fine :-)

There is no problem with the mail server – you need to look at your local setup.

telnet mail.aanet.com.au 110
+OK Solid POP3 server ready
user
+OK username accepted
pass xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
+OK authentication successful
list
+OK scan listing follows

Thanks Jason, will try that – the 'connection refused' bit still puzzles me, though...
Rgds,

LMH

edit: tried every which way – no go.. thought it might have to do with the latest Thunderbird update a couple of days ago, since connection was working fine until yesterday. So I set up the account again using MS Outlook, but get the error msg: "0x800ccc0e"...

If it IS a password error: how do I get to retrieve/reset my password?

No hurry, but – I get my Gmail on the N78 :-)

BUT what if aanet wants to send me a bill? I better fix this 'connection refused' error ASAP...

aaNet bills are (and always have been) available only via the member's area. They will not be trying to email you a bill.

How very considerate of you to remind me of this, Andy; I get so many bills online these days that I believed this one could be among them, and it being close to my renewal (1 h in fact) I was most eager to avoid any precipitate steps being taken :-)

But then, I needn't have worried: my dues to the esteemed provider are being collected automatically – ascribe it to my advanced age that I tend to overlook such details.

Now to a more salient point, seeing that you appear to be more conversant with aanet's practices than I am, and considering that I won't be able to ring support on the weekend, would it not have been more helpful if you'd pointed me into the direction of getting the strangely aberrant behaviour of my e-mail client fixed?

If I had a suggestion that hasn't already been posted I would have offered it. Unfortunately I don't know enough about your setup or the particular error message to be of much use to you.

You can google the error msg as quickly as any of us can, but a way to ensure that you have the correct password is to log in on webmail http://mail.aanet.com.au/src/login.php

Further to this topic:

The Error Number: 0x800CCC0E is triggered because of a built in behavior with Microsoft Outlook Express. While connected to the Internet using the MSN network, Outlook Express will not allow you to send messages to another Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) server. Error Number: 0x800CCC0E is fairly easy to fix nonetheless.

Now, since I DON'T use OE, it doesn't really apply to anything on my machine...

Just thought I'd post this MS explanation from Google to perhaps save others the 'hassle' of looking for it :-)

Cheers,

LMH

Your google skills need honing: JFTR your error does affect Outlook

The minus sign in front of express asks google to filter out all results that contain express.
