I have only just joined Optus on Friday morning so not sure what to expect from their coverage, but looking at their coverage maps every thing looks fine here in Ipswich.

My iPhone either shows

-Optus 3G
-Optus & a Dot (GSM)
-Optus
-No Service

When it shows just Optus I can't access and data, no safari, no internet apps, nothing, but still gets SMS or phone calls.

And I'm getting a lot of NO Service.

What's with the phone just showing 'Optus' if this isn't 3G or GSM what is it?

Also tonight I found it hard to get any data no matter if it was showing 3G or GSM.

Maybe Optus is overloaed with new iPhones? And I'm guessing there is only one tower in Ipswich, could this be true?

Hi there

I had been with Optus for about 2 months prior to getting my iPhone and initially thought it was the cheap Nokia I was using that was the cause of my poor reception.

After getting my iPhone home I realised that it is just the Optus network that is not performing.

Like you, I get VERY POOR RECEPTION to the point where I am about to return the phone.

Why have a mobile phone that cannot be used at home – how stupid is that.

To add insult to injury, I had to pay a $300 contract termination fee for a $99 phone even though I was willing to take out the new iPhone plan PLUS an additional plan to replace the one that the iPhone was transferred to.

I remember when Optus used to advertise "Yes" as their catch phrase – for me it is more like "NO"

Regards

Lawrie

Did you test with another handset to prove/disprove this theory?

Optus has a 30 day coverage guarantee that it allows to to cancel/port out without penalty if its proven that there is a coverage problem where you are. The fact that you let it go so long and then bought an iPhone and you are still getting poor reception. No one to blame but yourself.

3G
the Dot is 2.5g which can still use internet

I'm glad to hear that they actually have the 30-day coverage guarantee. I'm getting an iPhone as soon as I go back to Melbourne and not so sure whether they have a good 3G coverage in the University of Melbourne area. :\
