another article – http://www.phonesreview.co.uk/2008/07/10/steve-jobs-app-store-with-500-iphone-applications-quarter-are-free/

25% of the apps are free
90% are under 9.99$ (USD presumably)

1/3 of the apps are games (which suggests around 150-200 games at launch!)

most stupid app would be the flash light application. Is basically is just a white screen, yet they actually want people to pay $1,20 for it.

Hmmm, wouldn't mind a Remote Desktop app (VNC) and perhaps a PDF reader (not sure if the iPhone already supports this?)

The thing about that though is that its easy money for them. Probably would have taken under 30mins to program (not a programmer so just guessing)

Currently 6million iphone users, by years end 10mill+. They would only need to a few kids to download the gimmick to make a fair bit

Each sale they'd get 0.84c (USD) – say 2000/year out of a few million iphone users – and easy $1.6k

If you have a look at another useless app – iamanda (article referring to it here – http://www.phonesreview.co.uk/2008/07/10/ipointless-ibeer-and-iamanda-apps-for-the-iphone-videos/)

$4.99 download cost – ie developer makes around $3.50 – you would easily get 10k people downloading the app if all the late night premium sms stuff is any indication (app is bikini clad woman washing the iphone screen lol).

I use my current phone quite a bit to provide a short burst of light so I don't think the app is useless, but there is a free flashlight so I'd get that one rather than paying.

You can use it as a wireless modem, setup a proxy on it and use the 3G connection that way. Look up "Tiny Proxy" for iPhone – works on the first gen :)

Just had a quick look through, and gee- most of those applications are very basic and "lame". Seems 95% of them could be done through a web browser and have no need for an actual "application" apart from the fact they want to make a few bucks.

Few of the games will probably be fun for people who want that out of their iphone, but honestly, I can't see anything I'd want to download, money isn't the issue.

I was expecting some apps that actually added decent functionality.

some interesting apps that may be useful to some people
- voice recording (fills a missing iphone function)
- phrasebooks in various languages when you travel
- english/other language dictionaries
- internet radio tuner

somehow I was hoping for more :) – still its early days

I've just downloaded a few free apps. I grabbed Bloomberg, Box Office, Currency, Dial Zero, eReader, Expense2GO, Exposure, Funambol, If Found, Light, Local Picks, NetNewsWire, NY Times, PayPal, PhoneSaber, Remote, reQall, SalesForce Mobile, UrbanSpoon and WeatherBug.

A fair few of the apps seem to be either US-centric, or not Aussie-centric enough to be useful, unless when travelling. Some of the ones I've downloaded I doubt I will use more than just opening them once and having a look at what other developers have come up with.

in games there is a maths quiz game which might be something along the lines of what you are after

Just saw an app called Shazam which looks pretty interesting – allows you to identify music that you hear (from tv, radio, in a store etc) – gives you title, artist etc and allows you to purchase songs etc

It's only on the US App Store, not the AU one. I just changed to the US iTunes Store, searched for "Google" and found it. It asks you to log in, and if you use your AU account, it tells you it's not available in the Aussie App Store and bounces you back.

Haven't tried it on the iPhone yet (actually I've got a Touch) because I'm still waiting on the 2.0 update, but I assume if you've got it authorized in iTunes that'll cary over seamlessly. In iTunes you just change your store login and it redirects you to the country for that login. It doesn't matter what login you currently have active as it remembers the authorizations for all the different ones.

Rather disappointed at the App Store, after all the hype. Only things that look interesting are some of the games so far.

Windows Mobile and Palm are still miles ahead in regards to variety, quality, and quantity, but early days yet of course.

Nothing from TomTom yet, or any good GPS software. I was also hoping for a port of Coreplayer or VLC to play additional video formats (eg DIVX etc) to make the iPhone a true multimedia player, but nothing so far.

I fear that Apple will probably block any VLC type app from the App Store, given that it will adversely impact their TV and movie sales through the iTunes store. I think that we'll have to jailbreak if we want any of the really functional apps.

IIRC, MS Office for Mac is one of the best selling Mac apps, so the answer is probably no.

Probably a market share sorta thing, can't see mac desktop users being MSN users.

The iphone is a different kettle of fish though, perhaps it's coming, real soon now!!!

All up there are 525 apps in the store right now, with many, many more to come in the near future. There are 410 applications for purchase, and 115 free apps.

That's a pretty decent amount for launch. By year's end, I think you'll be closer to 1000.

If you have a white dot at the bottom of the screen, it could be on page 2 of your home screen, just flick right to left

Anybody else having problems accessing the Apps Store from the phone? My phone seems to be set up to access the US App Store and I'm told when I login that my account is not authorised to access that store. Any ideas?

In the "Applications" tab, double click one of the apps you've downloaded. See if it mentions about authorising anything there, it did for me.

Done. That fixes it thanks!

You mean you cant just go to facebook.com with Safari, log on and view it like you would on a desktop? geez I thought the browser on this phone was supposed to be revolutionary!

This is essential for me because I regularly advertise on facebook, and I need constant access to the ad manager.. looks like i cant do that with the iphone version of facebook.com (iphone.facebook.com)

I have just purchased a little game from the App Store for my iPod Touch...can't seem to load it onto my Touch though. I'm guessing it has something to do with the Firmware update? Still says I have the latest version...1.1.4

When is the software update for the Touch due to be released? Seems very odd that I am able to buy from the Store before my iPod is capable of using any of these apps.

There are links to the 2.0 software for the iPhone, but MacRumors mentions they have not released it yet, and the links are not for the Touch yet.

That's what all the iTouch owners are waiting for. It's a paid upgrade, and will be available via iTunes.

I would keep an eye out here:

you absolutely can go to the regular facebook site, either go to www.facebook.com/inbox (or any other extension), or click on "regular site" from iphone.facebook.com...

page loads are noticibly slower on the normal site (duh)

I want to get Pandora:
http://www.pandora.com/on-the-iphone

However, when I click the link it says it's not available in Australia? I thought the AppStore would finally be the first time we've got access to everything available internationally :-(

Anyone seen a "ping" like tool applet ? I can't see one in the store

It would be nice to be able to ping some servers (ie to see if they are up/down)

No haven't seen anything like this, though it wouldn't be too difficult to make. Only thing is when you're on a cellular data connection, I'm not sure if sending ICMP requests would be allowed.

Seems like there are US specific application (eBay for example) that we can't download :(

Pre 3G iPhone you could install Terminal on your 2G iPhone and do it from a command prompt.

How would they Work? Apple does not allow an app to access the FileSystem (per say, as in a file browser)
hence Mail supports them because it can VIEW them as attachments

Can you copy apps and give them to people?

When you look in the Applications section (in iTunes) and you right click on an app, you can "Show in Finder". Could you copy the apps and give them to someone else? Would it work?

+100

I would love Village/Hoyts etc to act like adults and agree on something like this – it could even drive more people to their online ticket sales systems which require less staff but still charge a premium.

I bought the official MLB (Major League Baseball) app for $5 which updates score and has video highlights. The scores are cool but the video will not play. Because it's all so new it's hard to google up info but I'm thinking now this might be a digital rights issue. Foxtel/Telstra/Bigpond, that whole mess. Just thinking of the commentary by industry analysts that Telstra's data plans were so hopeless because they don't want to cannabalise their existing content (don't know if that includes MLB but Fox have TV rights ... ) Anyone else have it and can access the vids?

hey mate, yeah just gave it a shot, but it limits your voice recordings length to just a few minutes.. is there one that has no limits, or has limits at least 1hr long?

Didn't know about the limitation. I've got VoiceNotes on my 2G iPhone – it is obviously a previous version of the software – and the longest recording I've made is just over an hour.

Chalk another one up for Jailbroken iPhones and Installer.app.
