Hey guys!

I have a Bravia 37" (from Kmart), i hooked it up to my laptop via the VGA cable supplied. Now I changed the resolution to 1360x768, so it will display on the TV full screen without any overscan and it looks perfect when in Windows. But when I play a movie in WMP or VLC player the movie only takes up a fraction of the size of the TV.

Picture: http://img154.imageshack.us/img154/3615/image028rn2.jpg

Any reason why it does this and doesn't display what the laptop is displaying?

Cheers!

Is the movie you are playing a downloaded Xvid file, if so the reason is it has been compressed to run that size.

Even when the movie isn't displayed in full screen mode on the laptop it still shows up like that on TV. I've set it to clone, so shouldn't the TV display everything the laptop does?

Check the manual that came with your Sony and make sure you run the resolution they recomend for PC connection for example you may need to run 60hz at 1024x 768 when connected to the TV. I had to do this with my older Samsung.

Try setting it to dual view/extended desktop or the like instead. Or disabling the laptop display entirely.

You will need to do this or make the TV the primary display.

Just changed the resolution to 1024x768, no luck.

In windows there are black bars on the side of the TV like when you watch something in 4:3

And when playing the video it's exactly teh same as when viewed in the other resolution.

I made the TV the primary device, so the highest resolution I could choose was 1024x768, I was unable to choose 1360x768. Bit disappointed.

Well I've been reading up on VGA Cables, and apparently the highest resolution I can achieve is 1024x768. Any idea on how to achieve a higher resolution? Any idea if I could use one of these?

You being stuck on 1024x768 has nothing to do with the VGA cable and everything to do with your computer's graphics drivers.

Check the specifications section on your manual. The S4000 manual isn't online yet, but the older S3100's clearly shows support for 1360x768.

I can view the desktop at 1360x768, it just switches to some weird view when viewing videos.

Edit:

This guy explains what's happening in the OP

Here's some pictures.

In this one you can see that the windows desktop is taking up the full screen

In this picture you can see the laptop displays the movie only for a fraction of the screen but also displays VLC player, but the TV only shows the movie.

Well the TV has a HDMI port if that's what you mean? I don't think the laptop has any HDMI ports.

I can tell you that its not the TV or the VGA cable... most likely your laptops video card or a setting your running. I have the same tv, and used a VGA cable at first... had no problems, even with the same movie (big buck bunny).

Its most likely because you have clone mode on, the tv can display a larger resolution than your laptop, and the size on the tv is the exact same pixel size as the laptop.

Run in dual screen mode on your laptop so the tv is a seperate monitor/desktop.

Then move the media player (wmp or other) onto the TV desktop, then full screen it.

Btw, that movie looks amazing on the tv :P

Yapa
