I can't seems to access online content on the extra menu on MGS4, it seems to be unique to people on TPG.
Anyone else being able to connect to it on TPG?
I don't know what exactly ip/server the game connects to to do any testing.

Hi Jason/TPG,

Thanks for resoponding.
/forum-replies.cfm?t=992799&p=40

on PS3 – during Metal gear solid 4 game menu, go to Extras--> Network, and it gave an error message of *Network server Error*

some have tried with other provider and it works but when gone back home to try with TPG it gave exact same error message again
Maybe there are some ports that are accidently blocked or needed but is not allowed within TPG gateway.

The link goes from the Playstation 3 to the game server (Konami). It's an instant error message that is 'connection error'. It's a TPG issue, however I don't think it can be fixed easily as i can't really do a trace to it.

I am guessing it's either a DNS or cache problem.
The IP/hostname should be something along the line of playstation or konami.
When I've got time I might try and route the connection to my pc and see what it actually is.

i think it might be trying to use the TPG proxy, and it doesnt like it in someway. Makes sense since on other isps which dont use a transparent proxy it works fine?

I've always have ps3 ip in the DMZ on the router, but can't connect to network still. what do you get from it ? I've put 4 passwords and got the 4 songs.

but my question is what do we get from going to the network? extra chapter? or some equipment that we can use. if so what is the equipment(s)?

I forgot about this. When I first got the game I went to extras and got that error. I simply thought the servers were not active yet.

TPG needs to get on this NOW. Mess up my browsing every now and then, but don't f@%k with my gaming.

had to download update to usb and then run it off the ps3. also when you go to create connection select the advanced tab and manually input a proxy server (thats what i think is causing the problems). good luck.

Not happy jan!

I too thought the servers weren't active when I first tried it on release day. Then later I was starting to hope that it wasn't working because I hadn't finished the game yet, much to my dissapointment that is not the case. MGO seems to work ok though, very confusing!?!

Anyhow, finding this forum at least gives me hope that a solution can be found soon!

@TPG reps.
What can we supply to help with this problem?

To summarise, when accessing additional online content (downloads etc) for the recently released PS3 game Metal Gear Solid 4, upon clicking the "Connect to network." button, users receive an almost instant error titled "A network server error has occurred." (no screen-shots available, this is not running on Windows).

This game has an online gaming component that does work, but this Extras component does not.

I have tried different proxy settings (no proxy, "proxy.tpg.com.au", "proxy1.tpg.com.au", "proxy2.tpg.com.au").

I suspect that this problem may be due to whatever ISP Konami (publisher of the game) is using is blocking requests from TPGs proxies.

Can you help?

It does not seem like an issue users can fix by port forwarding either. Ports get forwarded fine on my PS3, I know this from the MGO beta where I setup the port to download an update via bittorrent. And other online games work fine, GTAIV, GT5P etc.

Come on TPG. Why do we have to miss out because we are your customers? I don't think any other ISP is facing this issue. And if it happens once and you don't fix it then it will probably happen again.

why is TPG refusing to fix a problem that a number of users are experiencing? (and only TPG users are having a problem, so its obviously their fault and fixable since other ISPs are working fine with MGS4). this just screams terrible customer service to me.

Hi,

This issue has been raised to Konami and Sony Playstation, as well for the hardware side. Based on Sony Playstation they have not tested the PLAYSTATION®3 computer entertainment system for use with Australia's broadband network. The PLAYSTATION 3 system was designed for use with network connections within the United States and Canada.

For Konami no feedback yet, please be reminded that TPG proxy only checks port 80 (HTTP).

There are things that need to be check, if it is possible check what server you are connecting?

Regards,
Jason

What a shocker on TPG's behalf. Failure to provide a service equal to what it's competitors can provide. Now that's pretty poor business management if you ask me. Time to start looking for a new ISP, which is a shame, because if I leave TPG with this bitter taste in my mouth then I will not be coming back. (and I certainly wont be talking about them in a positive way). You would think that they would give us some kind of feedback on this instead of keeping us in the dark. It just screams "customers have low priority" to me. What a shame

Ok, thank you for making me eat my words, it's great to get some feedback on this Jason, (like a ray of sunshine!)

As i said before its pretty obvious TPG hasn't heard of the phone, they are probaly trying to contact Konami via carrier pidgeon or something.

Here is a few easy steps TPG can follow.

1) Pick up the phone!!
2) Dial the number for Konami
3) Get the server details from Konami
4) Apply it to the internal TPG mumbo jumbo

Problem Solved....

Sorry, but that is just a piss poor excuse. This problem is only occurring on TPG, not any of the other Australian ISP's.

I'm very close to churning away from TPG, poor custom support, and this other shit I had with 14GB going areas within 15 hours, pushing me over my on-peak limit.

I doesn't matter what proxy setting you use, it will not work. I believe that whatever network service Konami is using to provide the Extras content has blacklisted the TPG network. The only way for that to be fixed is for TPG to contact Konami (and for Konami to listen and respond) with a request to have the blacklisting removed. This would require TPG to purchase a PS3 and diagnose the problem which I doubt very much they would bother doing.
My neighbour very graciously let me use their network (Optus cable) to test and not surprisingly the connection to the Extras menu was successful first time.
