For two days Friday 27th & 28th may 2011.

Dick smith and tandy are having 20% off macs and itunes cards(includes staff discount), also other products instore have other discounts, i seen some tvs for 10% off and i think a hard drive for like 40% off(could be wrong about the hard drive).

Also available online(well i know for dse anyway) just enter staff discount card into everyday rewards field.

Does anyone know if dick smith does delivery and built to order and does anyone know if david jones, myer or apple store should price match?

they also have 15% off all other apple computers (for Woolworth staff) and dicksmith must delivery as the catalogue says order online if you cant make it to a store.
i would doubt other retailers would price match a employee discount especially that much of a discount.

I believe it's 20% off only one model (MBP i5 13") and 15% off all others (inclusive of your 5% discount). iPads are excluded.

Just to be pedantic, it's not actually 20% off as far as I'm aware, it's more likely to be 10% off, then another 10% off the remaining price, which is close, but not quite.

I was under the same understanding. From what I had heard there is an 8% margin to retailers. However I did also hear that Apple has a 5% (sounds low) share of the profit in the mobile handset sector worldwide but a 55% share of the profit. This would mean that retailers & customers are screwed but Apple makes a fortune. Sounds pretty close to the truth knowing Apple. This way Apple could afford to discount to retailers.

I have never used an iTunes card but have seen them discounted on lots of sites. Can they be purchased & used towards anything other than music & apps? If they could be used for hardware it would be a good way to save some money.

This is a great deal, tomorrow and Saturday only. I saw it on Monday at work, took the printout to JB Hifi the next day and they price matched it. I think it's just the 13" MBP base model, the exact one I wanted too.

So $1119 for the computer, that's $280 off. Yesterday I ordered the 8gb RAM upgrade and a 120 gig Mercury SSD from OwC. All up, slightly over $1400. Laughing.

It does make you wonder what the real margins are on Apple products, particularly computers. This is 20% off, that has to be below wholesale, surely, considering what we know about Apple's fine margins.

20% is definitely well below normal cost price. The 8% mentioned earlier is the true markup on Apple computers, however, there is also a small rebate a store may get depending on a whole plethora of conditions Apple put on them. So upfront, the markup is 8%, but if the store meets targets related to how many accessories they sell, how much volume they shift, what percentage they sell of computers to AppleCare, what marketing the company does etc etc, then they can get a rebate back later that is only another few %, and varies on model to model and whether it's consumer or pro gear, but absolute max is about 12 – 14% markup total between actual markup and rebate together.
However, staff of dealers are usually able to buy one machine per annum at about 15-25% off, again this varies on what machine and if it's consumer or pro gear, so I suspect what has happened is Apple have for one special occasion let Dick Smith extend this staff discount, that would normally only apply to Dick Smith staff, to everyone else who works in the Woolies group that wouldn't normally qualify.

Co-op bookshop price is their price plus going through the fact that they're authorised to sell through the education store. It usually works out at about 12%

I doubt that. Young salesman at DSE told me Apple will be very strict with this 20% off deal to ensure only Woolworth employees get it.

He said you pay full price and then get the 20% off as a rebate once your employee status has been verified.

Yes, only required a staff discount card. As previous poster pointed out – item scans through at full price but system reduces the price automatically once a valid staff discount card has been added to the sale.

Woolworths branded credit card is definitely not required – unless you wanted interest free of course!

Was it the MacBook Pro (as you quoted) or MacBook Air that you purchased? If it was a MacBook Pro you should have another look on the RHS of unit. ;)

For the MacBook Air I would recommend the Apple MacBook Air SuperDrive – http://store.apple.com/au/product/MC684ZM/A?mco=MTY3ODQ5OTY RRP $89.00

Reason I recommend this is unlike most other USB External DVD drives, this one only uses one USB port – where others use two to get the required power.

Otherwise, use another computer to copy the data of the iWork disc onto USB stick or Portable HDD and use that to install onto your MBA.

Hardly, be realistic. The buyer rebates for these promotions end at the end of this week AFAIK, any sale going through the till at these prices later than that would directly affect the store's P&L report, very, very badly.

I wouldn't recommend that to anyone, unless they want one to match the look of their MBA, which is all well and good! BUT, that 'SuperDrive' is a slower drive than almost all the other optical drives on the market at the same price, which the majority of don't require 2 USB ports anymore.
