If you want to do things like overclock and hack around in the phone then yes things can get complicated. But if you don't plan on doing that i.e. phone, text, chat, email, web, music, video etc. then this phone is very good. Maps is shit though.

Having to be locked to itunes in my books isn't real good.

With the N900 you can use whatever you like, personally I use Songbird to sync music.

If you want to do things like overclock and hack around in the phone then yes things can get complicated. But if you don't plan on doing that i.e. phone, text, chat, email, web, music, video etc. then this phone is very good. Maps is shit though.

Thanks but I want maps on my phone also. N900 is out also. Might consider a phone with the Maemo software next time around. I was told by someone this software was pretty difficult to use. Just checking whats around right now. No not into overclocking the phone. I don't even know what that is. I want all the above plus maps. thanks anyway. Debbie.

I don't know your situation, but it may be worth pointing out that a full turn-by-turn navigation on a phone has always seemed fundamentally pointless to me as its just not a practical screen size and so on, I've got a dedicated GPS I used for what that is 10 times better than any GPS software I've tried on a phone.

As is though, the N900 has maps support and internal GPS, but you won't get turn-by-turn navigation on the N900 (yet.. but unfortunately I've been saying yet for 9 months).

The N900 is a terrific mobile computing and I'd not rule it out too quickly.

For you and me maybe. But the Mrs gets confused because there are too many options, too many ways to do things. Jobs made the iPhone easy by limiting it. Or crippling it, as we would see it. No multitasking for one. A home button for instant reset to known place. I have to admire it, but that does not mean I like it.

There are 3rd party options such as maep, mapero, and Sygic for a commercial product with voice-nav.
But for in-car navigation, I can't understand why anybody would want to use their phone.
Same with music – much easier to have a $20 MP3 player in the cigarette-lighter socket that to use the N900.

I have a Navman for in car navigation and an Mp3 player for music in the car. I like the maps for finding where I need to be when I am walking no other reason. I want the internet, email, bluetooth etc. But I also want a phone thats going to be easy to use as I generally have to use it while on the run (not driving). I have to basically use my phone as a mini PDA with specific dates and so forth for appointments for myself and my clients. thanks Debbie.

As good as the n900 is (and I would not trade it for any other phone on the market), I believe there are better phones to suit your needs. Most high end phones will probably be more suitable in terms of polished user experience.....just avoid the n97 like the plague...

Edit: for what it's worth, I can personally recommend the Galaxy S – it is an exceptional phone. The n8 I haven't had the chance to play with.

Thanks schmodie, I will be avoiding the N97 like the plague. I will have a play with the Samsung and go from there. I'm not a fan of intergrated batteries which is what the N8 has. I will try and have a play of the N8 also. thanks Debbie.

Lots of phones look good when you read the specifications or even play with them in the store, but it is not until you really have used them in your situation that you know if they work or not.

I don't think he has found one, otherwise I think he would have ditched the N900 by now.

From what you said you don't need turn-by-turn? If thats there case theres no reason the N900 couldn't be used. There are near on a dozen GPS applications available that'll tell you your current position on a map and can give a route. I can't say I've tried any extensively, but for what it is worth I imagine you'll find something that'll tailor your needs.

I don't think I will be getting the N900, as I have an issue with the maemo software being difficult to use. Thanks for the info. I am considering a different phone all together. thanks Debbie.

Difficult really isn't a fair word for it. It's more of a learning curve than anything. It's really a matter of sitting down for 2 to 3 hours to play with it till you can understand navigation. It's no more difficult to understand that a basic computer. Once you understand the layout and recognize what everything does it really isn't so bad.

I suppose it depends on your definition of difficult. After understanding the OS and its ins and outs I find my N900 to be ten times easier to use in the fact I can accomplish anything on it much faster than any mobile. With multitasking, automation from widgets and so forth, in the long run it becomes the simpler choice for a lot of things.

Being able to do tasks you'd only expect a PC capable of enables a lot more things to be done on the go and that is a massive lifeline for me.

Take today, needed to fill out a stat dec and had no idea where to get one. Hit the net, found a corresponding .doc file and proceeded to open it on the phone and fill out what I needed, printed it over wireless, got the JP (who was leaving in 5 minutes) to sign it.. and I was set.

Thanks yes I suppose it is not much more than a learning curve. Someone I know took 3 days to learn how to use this phone. Yes I understand what you are saying. Which software would you go for Android of Maemo Meego? Thats great being able to print a stat dec off from the phone. I might have to do a little more research into this phone before a decision is made. thanks Debbie.

hi Debbie, n900 is basically a mini computer with phone functionality. you can use it easily as a normal mobile phone, or customize it for more features as many of us in this thread have done.

from my observation by reading here, i'd say iphone would suit your needs. myself is not an iphone fan, but i've also got an iphone which is used mainly by wife.

but again, n900 is not for everyone. this is a powerful device. can even act as remote control for your tv!

should you decide to get n900, come back to this thread, and all of us are more than wiling to help. you can also read the wiki here:

just to emphasize, this is nokia n900 thread ;)

one more thing, if you want a phone with a long battery life, i can say this phone is not for you, especially if you want to be online all the time (skype, google talk, yahoo messenger etc)

I do most of these and get 18 hours battery off a single charge. Just to give an actual value. It really isn't so terrible :P

Ok, I finally done it. My N900 is in a reboot loop.

It goes as far as the Nokia logo screen as soon as you turn it on then reboots.

Long story short, Nitdroid install went sour, not to worry, I took a backup before hand.

My questions are:

1. (I'm a n00b) Can I reflash on Win7 64-bit?
2. Is there an app that will do it for me?
3. If no and no, where to from here?

Skype and SIP are the problems. I had them activated all day until recently and I'd run out of battery by about 7.30pm. Now that I've turned off Skype and SIP I'm getting over a day and a half. When I get home at night I've got about 2/3 of my battery still.

Haha... yeah I had that problem, you'll need access to another computer with vista or XP... OR I think you get get some sort of linux live disc especially for this.

Im having trouble with gpodder. I downloaded the podcast fine but when i come to play it on the music player it refuses to open it i don't know why.

The podcast is in .m4a or acc something like that which is a real player file, so i downloaded the extra decoders support from maemo, restarted my phone and it still wont play the podcast. I tried playing the podcast from the root folder but it still won't play it

I used Abiword for that as it didn't require any special formatting. But with a little more effort I could have used FreOffice or OpenOffice I'm sure.

Don't know, just do :P To be fair I usually have MSN/Skype (not SIP) offline for a couple hours of the day, I get maximum 3G reception, haven't got any active widgets (and none that connect to net) and have brightness at 3/5. Usually find its just about dead after getting home from work at 10-11 pm after leaving home at 6:30-7am, so okay more like 16 hours. That's with 2 hours FM transmitter at least and a little browsing/gaming/ssh'ing.

I'd like to set up a QBW to open a particular image file located in my documents folder. I have tried using the 'image-viewer' command, but nothing happens. I found the following code on TMO

That is almost certainly not what you want to do. That'd be if you were writing your own program. Unfortunately all hildon applications seem to be a pain in the neck to simply call from xterm (maybe that is just me).

EDIT: Alright I have a solution, found it only cause I was curious :P
Do the following in xterm (as root):
apt-get install wget < If you don't have it>
cd /usr/bin/
wget http://rapidshare.com/files/426332180/openfile
chmod +x openfile

Test it by then typing
openfile <fullpath>
Eg.
openfile /home/user/MyDocs/DCIM/<picname>

It only seems to work with full path so you'll need /home/user/MyDocs also make sure to use Tab button to autocomplete so it autocorrects any spaces and what not.

So thus in the QBW the code you will need will simply be:
openfile <fullpath>

It's a combination of needing money and doing a tiresome Engineering degree. 3/5 days a week it basically goes 6:30 am wakeup, drive 1 hour to uni, labs/lectures/tutes, 4-5 pm 1 hour drive home, get dressed, start work at 5:30 pm and finish at 10-11.

Fortunately the other 2 days are 8 hour days at least.

Just another month and I'll be in the clear (at least till next year).

For those customising icons, I have come to work out a plan for finding icon locations.

It is a combination of suggestions from 2 people, one from TMO and beatty, and some sussing out I did.

A complete list of installed packages can be revealled with this command in terminal or in putty via ssh:
dpkg -l
Then you can find the actual package name of the icon/s you wish to change then use:
dpkg -L package-name-here to give the location of all the files included in that package and their locations.

If you think you know the name of the icons you can use:
find / -name icon-name.png to show the location/s of the icons, or if you want wildcards as you only think you know part of the name
find / -name *partname*.png

Hope that helps budding customisers like Beatty and I.

Clear device isn't very extensive. It'll remove your IM accounts and other things, but will in no way do a decent job. Any application you have will keep its settings, including calendar and browser cookies (logins) etc.

You would definitely be better off reflashing. It really isn't that big of a deal to do.

How long do you find you N900 lasts before needing a reboot? mine was up to 22.5 Days and it stopped letting me go on 3g and wasnt reveiceing or sending messages / phone calls.

I'm currently on 3 paying $37 ($29 plan and $8 internet pack) and was considering moving onto voip. Basically, I'm interested in retaining the features I have now (need to be able to call skype/voip via 3g and wifi, receive standard voice calls, have a fixed number, SMS etc). I think this can be achieved via a data plan with exetel and a voip service with something like mynetfone/penetel? Suggestions/expertise appreciated! (I did notice mynetfone says it only works for iPhones *shudder* but I presume with the correct sip settings no app would be required?)

Four days is pushing it. I got to six and was surprised it was still working properly, but as soon as that thought came to mind of course it started to have issues and so I rebooted it soon after.

I guess it is only the people customising and installing stuff left right and centre who reboot often.
I reboot every few days even if I am doing nothing. If I am swapping icons and backgrounds etc I can reboot 3 – 4 times in a day.

If your reception is good with 3, get a $15/month, 1GB mobile broadband SIM. You can port your number, and make outgoing calls at 50c/min if voip fails.

I had trouble with exetel. Lots of dropped packets when not much traffic, so i lost SIP registration and missed incoming calls. Exetel support were not helpful.

That's right, no app is required. You can set up multiple SIP accounts, that are integrated into the contact details in your phonebook. I use four VoIP providers plus Skype and select the account when I make a call.

I'm only on a $29 dollar cap with 3, but have been making a lot more calls than usual recently (including a few overseas) and just use VoIP to tide me over.

I'm in Thailand at the minute and the VoIP accounts have come in handy for making cheap/free calls back to Australia.

Numbers are for incoming calls, not outgoing. I was talking about porting your mobile number to the MBB SIM for receiving calls. ie even though the plan is marketed for modems, it works fine as a phone service.
You can set up your outgoing VoIP service so that it gives your mobile number as caller-ID, depending on the provider.

Yes. Though VoIP data at roaming rates is still cheaper. Or use a callback service.

I am sure there would be clear posts expressing the same concern over at TMO if info was going to another party. It looks like email is routed to/via your own specified mail handler, just judging by the UI.

I have avoided this due to a lack of understanding but might have to have a bit more of a look into it.

Probably not such a dumbo question. Chances are your going to have to flash the new image as most of those will render some serious ugly mess :S

EDIT: Andddd TMO is down again. Dang this is so annoying.

I am about to try Sims 3 on my phone. Will update after reboot (1% rootfs free space really messes things up :P)

EDIT2: Got Sims 3 and NFSU running perfectly at full speed. Very simple to do. I simply took the folder, placed in /home/user/<gamename> then ran preenv and then /home/user/<gamename>/gamename

Worked first try for Sims 3. And worked after a chmod +x gamename for NFSU.

The N900 is now the ULTIMATE phone. 'Nuff said.

Does anyone have a link to image downloads for PR1.3? TMO is still down and I wanna flash root tonight as I'll be busy for the next 2 weeks after tonight :P

Looks like TMO is being crushed by the prospect of the PR1.3. (20.2010.36-2)

At least we will finally have OVI suite support etc.

Well it is so I can install them as an icon theme. So yeah.

I have got my custom icons in the correct folder hierarchy to I just need to drop my share folder on my computer into the usr folder on the device and allow overwrite and the icons are done.
Then I just need to drop the backgrounds and images folders into the black-plastic-theme folder and I should be back to my current custom setup.

I whimmed you the pm from D4rk.

I'm tethering my N900 to my PC for the first time right now.
Very useful coz I got no internet at home atm. Works great. =)

Are you officially defeated on a transparent background for Personal Dataplan Monitor? It's the only thing on the desktop I don't like anymore. Even tidied up the QBWs I had made for MarioKart and SuperMario so they fitted in.
Searching for 'the' background at the moment to top it all off.

Had one for about 2 weeks that a friend loaned me, otherwise no. I did still have multiple .ipk files available though.

So what I've done to install:
Install PRE environment:
root
apt-get install preenv

Then take the .ipk file and use 7zip (sure winrar or something could do it) to extract it. Keep doing that till you stumble across a data folder (it'll be named com.something.gamename). Copy that onto the MyDocs folder (Ie. Plug in and drag to main folder). Then move the folder into /home/user (or ext3 partition of MicroSD so as not to fill up /home/):

mv /home/user/MyDocs/gamename/* /home/user/gamename/
cd /home/user/gamename
chmod +x gamename (it may be in the Game folder)
preenv

Finally to run the game:
./gamename

If it works you can 'install' it so it'll show up in menu:
desktopgen appinfo.json

Done!

So far found many games to be fully playable :P

Guess updating to PR1.3 isn't that easy for me with such slow 3G internet. I'll do it tomorrow if I have the time. Hmm. I hope there will be a new power kernel out soon that will support it. I really need mine overclocked back to 1Ghz asap. =P

When installing preenv? Chance are he probably just updated (he's upgraded deb 10 times today lol), try again now or something.

Otherwise just create a dummy file at that location. Ie:
mkdir /user/share/doc/libsmpeg0

Hmm TMO is still down. Must be cause of US waking up. Was only at 800 users earlier, which is well below the amount we got for PR1.2 (~1500)

EDIT: Well I got tired of waiting for the update in appman so I did a forcible apt-get upgrade. As such it seems to have gone off without a hitch (after multiple work arounds as I have no rootfs space: the downside to having unoptified build tools ON the device :P)

I'm kind of terrified to reboot for fear of the damage it has done... but here goes.

Just saw the update notice flashing on mine a little while ago clicked on it and there was Maemo5 update, ran back up clicked update and rebooted a few minutes ago with out a hitch.

Now just trying to figure out what has changed.
So far I can see modest mail is a lot faster to open.
Can't wait to find what else may be fixed or new.

Been trying to work that one out for myself. TMO is as congested as the Westgate Freeway during peak hour. Can't even get the page to load.

Just rebooted after update.

PS – this is not an endorsement of the OTA update, anything that goes wrong for you isn't my fault :-)

titan (maker of power kernel) said that he will update his power kernel with the bug fixes that are included in the new PR1.3 kernel. But for now, he said that current power kernel also works fine.

But he did say to reinstall it after upgrading to PR1.3 via following commands:

sudo gainroot
apt-get install --reinstall kernel-power kernel-power-flasher

also, Nitdroid dual boot still works. But you have to reinstall nitdroid/multiboot.
(Seems you don't have to according to Beaty. good stuff. I'm doing the update now)

From my quick reading of TMO (between meltdowns), those needing to reinstall seemto have flashed rather than OTA.

EDIT: TMO is back up – some people having problems with some apps. (so don't just rely in my experience)

I had to update via PC Suite – not sure why OTA didn't work. Anyway, backup, install update, restore from backup....everything working fine. I had to reset my overclock speed, but that was it.

I have now updated to PR1.3 via OTA.

[Before Upgrade]
Had multiboot setup as following.
1. Original omap
2. Power kernel v40
3. Nitdroid

Had it booted up using option 2.
Had it overclocked to 1Ghz.
Had Conky as Live Wallpaper
Using Black Plastic Theme
Had Theme Customizer with smaller desktop icons.
Had modified hildon desktop with enlarged thumbnails for multi-tasking
Had many many many apps installed.
Had MSCIM with Hangul (Korean) IME.
Had Swappolube with propsed settings enabled.

Used FAM to upgrade to PR1.3. (not HAM)
It told me 1022 items will be upgraded. ~85MB.

[After Upgrade]
It took around ~20mins to upgrade.
Didn't prompt me to reboot. Did it anyways.
Now About Product shows the new version.
Noticed my icons on desktop are back to default size.
(update – new version of theme customizer fixed this issue)
Still booted up to power40 kernel without issues.
Overclocking still works. Back to 1Ghz.
Live wallpaper works.
Modified hildon desktop is not working. (haven't tried reinstalling yet)
I STILL have multiboot. I can still boot into Nitdroid.
Swappolube shows that it has reset the values back to default.
I still have issues with video recording dropping frames. Grrrr.

[Things Noticed so far]
MicroB bug of address bar buttons not appearing STILL exists. Grrrr.
MicroB seems smoother during scrolling pages around. Maybe maybe not. lol
Transition effects seems smoother. Dunno It just does. Drops less frames.
Multi-tasking seems a bit snappier. Hmm. Maybe due to smoother transitions?
Overall, upgrade went smoothly and didn't really make anything worse. Good enough.

Now where's PR1.4? lol

Hmmm, I just tried to update OTA but it tells me this update needs to be installed using Nokia's PC Suite. I can only see a Windows version of this yet I run Linux (Fedora). Anyone else running Linux managed to update their phone somehow??

I read on TMO that sometimes it is an incompatible app and if you unistall it, the OTA works. This seems the cleanest way to do it.

Pretty sure you can also flash with the new image (see Maemo wiki for instructions) using Fedora. I've only done it with Mint though.
Flashing also means you definitely will need to backup/restore, and will lose OC, NITDroid etc.

That said, MicroB It is still definitely improved under 1.3 with speed/scrolling..

Had to do my update via NSU.

Did the update, restored my backup, everything is back to normal. Titians OC works. Running fine at 1150MHz.

Haven't used it much since, but I haven't noticed any obvious changes.

Has anyone seen a changelog?

I just upgraded to PR1.3...had to do it via ovi suite.

It wiped all my apps off...grrrrrrrrrr not happy :(
and I cant overclock via power40 kernel any more

In xterm I type:
sudo gainroot
it says... Enable RD mode if you want to break your device

I can install the enhanced kernel etc via appmanager tho.
It was all ok on pr1.2

Any ideas?

ahh thanks, went looking for it on garage but couldnt see it there.

It did seem that all the comments were generally positive, but the idea of other people looking at it makes me feel a bit safer.

Installed it and the UI and it looks good, nice inbuilt test features too.

Only possible issue so far is that it seems to hang onto Internet connections, i.e not automatically moving between 3G and WLAN.

Hi,

If you can't update to R1.3 over the air, then it is possibly due to a conflicting package. Look at the details page of the update, and manually remove the conflicting packages using "sudo apt-get remove <packagename>" , you will need to exit the application manager first.

Uninstalled a package that had Maemo convinced it installed hildon-desktop and without thinking it uninstalled hildon-desktop and hildon-home so I'm stuck in reboot loop :P

Guess its reflash time.

Thanks for the advice – realised there was a package conflict caused by Tuxracer and Frogattao (forget the name but it was an OpenGL related library). Removed offending library/software & the update happend OTA with no dramas.

Does anyone know the firefox repository url for installing 1.1? (not the latest beta)
If not, I can install the beta, but I want full hotmail/live.com not the mobile version that it automatically brings up (mobile.live.com) Even if i remove mobile. it always reverts back auto...so annoying

The BIGGEST difference I noticed after updating to PR1.3 is:
- Sound quality improvement via pulse audio.
(MAFW via mediabox or the standard media player)

OMG. My N900 sound so much better now. Before, sound was warm, a bit too warm with restrained highs and definitely a narrow soundstage. (not very airy) Felt a bit tight and cramped up. A bit muddy even.

But now, the sound has changed BIG time. Sound is more alive. Highs are more prominent yet not too harsh,bass is better separated to the mids and wider soundstage for sure. Anyways, I always felt a bit annoyed with my N900's sound output. Now, I really enjoy it. Good stuff. (I'm sure it's not placebo effect)

btw, I listen to flac and only 320k mp3's using a pretty good IEM.
(right now, my fav is Fischer Audio Eterna

I'm never one for picking up on these sorts of things, but even over FM transmitter into my crappy stock car stereo I can notice a little improvement. Personally I never had issue with stuttering, but the sound now is definitely improved. The funny thing is even the previous was better than iPod sound quality (although didn't hold a candle to my old Rockbox iPod).

On another note, update to preenv means I can now play Monopoly and Assassins Creed on the N900. Unfortunately Assassins Creed wasn't created with intelligence and sideways compatability in mind so its unplayable without multitouch (remappable keys to be able to use the keyboard or even prox sensor would have rendered it completely playable too, what a shame...).

Just a heads up to those trying to update OTA, if you have the GLtron game installed, it also blocks installation.

ok i got the update icon, checked it out and it was the 1.3 update.
i backed up the current os twice to make sure just in case.
it did prompt me to run pc suite to install update, so i installed the program only to find it not able to support this device, so i had to re install ovi.
anyway after a bit of stuffing round i got it running.
did the update 100%, ran the backup and i was prompted that i need to reinstall a list of apps.
after about 30 mins it rebooted and i was expecting it to be complete but i noticed some apps where not installed.
i had to run the backup twice and reboot the phone and i got all the apps back up. there was a little stuffing round but it was time frame that was the issue not the process.

Can anybody else get Airport (the game) to run after the 1.3 update? I can't, and have uninstalled and reinstalled to no avail.

I did the same as whoever above.... installed Nokia PC suite only to be told it didn't work. Lol.

You want this and/or ovi suite (I believe ovi suite comes packaged but not sure).

Connect in PC-suite mode. It will take a while as the file is largish ~ 200mb and the servers (were) slow. Enjoy! (Note: this will wipe your phone clean)

Edit: You want to initiate the update on your PC NOT your phone.

all good now, a complete reboot and all is well, loaded up my OC of 250-900 and nothing wrong with any apps.

How do you guys find the phone quality/experience of SIP calls whilst on 3G? Lately its been quite poor for me. (3 mobile users need only reply.)

Only real issue was an incompatability with N900ftp (libqt4-test).
Uninstalled that and the update downloaded/installed in 15 minutes.

No hassles with '3' and things seem a bit snappier.

Complete cluster-f**k for me so far.
Steps I took:

• Wouldn't update OTA, so I connected it via PC Suite.
• Did a complete backup of all the data, which only came to ~4GB.
• Update went through and installed PR1.3
• Powered off the phone, powered on, put in PIN.. np so far
• Loaded PC suite, connected the (empty) phone
• Went to restore my backup and it tells me 'There is not enough memory to restore all the data'
• Restored whatever it could.. All I have are contacts and a bunch of random files.

Took a look in HAM and the 'Restore applications' option is un-highlighted so I cant select it. All my settings, widgets, conversations, emails etc are all gone :-(

Even better, the Application Manager had screen corruption across the title bar.. awesome, just awesome. Reflashed it now from PC Suite above, and haven't seen the corrupt graphics again, but I still have nothing on there now.

About to throw it at the brick wall here...

Edit: OK.. crap. Copied the actual Hildon backup data from my PC back to the N900 before trying to restore the data (thank christ I copy the backups to my PC as well as on the phone..) and restored THIS one, which seemed to work. Restoring all the Applications now.

still no difference for me, the best i can get is LV 250 850, anything higher than that will be unstable.

but i noticed the default kernel after upgrading to PR1.3 is 250 600, that's why it runs smoother.

Oh it wasn't to say my overclock has increased, just that it is still do-able on the most recent update (PR1.3 obv.). Mine becomes very unstable at 1GHz for anything but the default settings (and even then it'll crash with something intensive like mupen64plus).

A solution for this is to do a right-to-left swipe to bring up the visual history, and then exit to go back to the page you were viewing. The buttons now appear! I was very happy when I discovered this trick.

the navigation software is free BUT the voice onver navigation isnt.

mind you hwne i first got my n900 i got it connected to ovi and installed the navigation but not the voice guide. its pretty neet though dose what it dose.

yep, tested every single profile with the limits changed, but unstable, the most stable for mine is LV.

A solution for this is to do a right-to-left swipe to bring up the visual history, and then exit to go back to the page you were viewing. The buttons now appear! I was very happy when I discovered this trick.

I use Opera for N900 as my default browser and only use MicroB for the odd site that Opera doesn't do so well in. I think Opera is way better overall.

I also just installed the latest version of Instinctiv released by Peter at TMO. (Check the Instinctiv thread – vers. 102610.deb) It now supports landscape and has made a massive performance improvement. This still is their final release mind you but a very nice player, and the only one which includes the shazzam like feature called Identify.
They still have a few features to add but it already a very nice player.

Okay. I did apt-get update and then upgrade and it updated some programs as well as some core looking components. Now it connects via 3.5G. Phew. Seems some program must have broke something. ah well. all good now. =)

Before, sound was warm, a bit too warm with restrained highs and definitely a narrow soundstage. (not very airy) Felt a bit tight and cramped up. A bit muddy even.

But now, the sound has changed BIG time. Sound is more alive. Highs are more prominent yet not too harsh,bass is better separated to the mids and wider soundstage for sure.

To me this sounds like something Lewis Carrol may have written. I understand technical terms like frequency response, harmonic distortion, S/N ratio, and channel separation, but what is "alive", "warm" or "airy"?? Do these words have any real meaning when applied to sound reproduction, rather than to a particular piece of music or recording?

lol. I had a moment. I'm definitely not an artist that's for sure. btw, those are quite commonly used terms to describe perceived sound quality / reproduction when reviewing sound equipment and its rendering of sound.

Anyways, I'm quite sure that new PR1.3 update sounds as if they tuned the equalizer with bumped up highs and slightly softened mids. (it lacks a bit of punch but suits more types of music) Trust me, it sounds better than before by far. How much you'll notice depends on what you listen with.

I've got mine also set to "always ask". Mine goes to roaming but that's for phone calls. If it needs to access the net, then it asks me. So that setting is working as expected. Are you thinking that it shouldn't even go to roaming for your phone reception?

It's not yet that useable really. I'll wait for MeeGo 1.2 or a backport of Nokia version MeeGo. That will be more like April next year though. Well, I hope to get the Nokia's MeeGo by then also with much better specs than N900. =P

There are a few options available to you.
There is the FMTX desktop widget as Beatty said, which for switching the TX on and off works great but I found it a source of power drain when not in use so I ditched it months ago. It may have had some improvements since then so check it out.

Fmrdsnotify is another widget which does similar but has additional functionality. I have seen and read some of the thread but haven't used it.

I have added the FM transmitter applet to my status menu permanently. It gets added there automatically when the transmitter is on, but closes when it gets shut down. I added it so it is there when off too so I can access it a little more easily.

I am sure you could make a QB widget for it. I recommend spending some time at TMO to suss out the options which best suits your needs and skill set.

Still on the FMTX function, I used the transmitter on the way home from work this morning while on I had the phone on charge and noticed it did actually charge, so it looks like that is one annoying bug 1.3 has sorted.

As others have said, theres an application for it... but it's a power hungry lunker as it polls the FMTX almost continuously.

A wrote a very simple script for QBW that'll not only switch on the FM transmitter, but it'll start playing music and full screen another QBW I can press to go to the next song. If your interested, the script to turn on FMTX and start playing music (if you'd like to know how to set up a Next widget I can do that too) then install Queen Beacon Widget, Leafpad and Rootsh from App manager, open up xterm and do the following:

mkdir qbwfm
cd qbwfm
leafpad qbw-fmtx-play

And into that paste the following:

Save it and close xterm.

Then create a QBW, open up the settings for it and hit Add Cmd. Call it whatever you want and place this in the command section:

This is something the phone prompts you with the first time you roam. You can change the setting under Settings > Phone then under the network heading there's an option for data roaming, you can change this to always ask or always allow. My guess is that its currently set to always allow.

If you have seen the Day/Date/Time QBW it looks the same as that.

More information mate. You say "no longer", no longer since when? What happened prior to that being fritzed?
Did it occur as a result of the PR1.3 update?
Maybe you just need to add the APN again, or maybe it is still there and just needs to be enabled?
I only noticed today when i had no service up the central coast that PR1.3 changed my setting from dual to 3G only.

Hi all,
I recently bought a Kingston 32GB microSD card (says it's a class 6) off ebay.
Formatted the card and copied a couple of gig of divx files to it. Watched one file semi-ok, wouldn't skip forwards or backwards, went to watch second file and got unsupported format error.... card was corrupted.
Formatted again, copied some files across, corrupted again. I didn't get to watch a file this time.
Tried again with formatter off sd website, still ended up corrupted.
I then did a full flash of my phone for PR1.3 and formatted the card. No error message about card being corrupted this time but some of the files are unreadable.
Before I raise an issue with the seller about a faulty card any ideas on checking where things a going wrong?

I did notice with the current format that the first batch of files seems ok (copied at about 4.5MB/s), it is the second set of files which are corrupted (these copied at 2MB/s).

Also I'm having trouble with some photos taken on the phone that are saved to the memory card. Could open them before but 2/3 had corruption of the image, now I can't even open them.

I've been using the card in my laptop (win7 x64) with built-in card reader and in phone via USB.

Get H2testw 1.4 and run it on the mSDHC card and see what it says. You really should have bought it from a local shop TBH. Sorry for the bad news if it is indeed a fake.

Have been using the Home Counter Separated command, which looks like two commands strung together. In order to put Up/Down arrows, going to try and separate the commands into 2 QBWs and attach an arrow to them – open to advice on a better way to do this.

Finally – does anyone have a link to the individual Meegons – I can find them in .pdf or as a group in a .png. Before I spend time separating them out, thought I'd check if there was an easier way.

I am just working on a FMTX on and off image at the moment, in line with the icon theme I am assembling.
I gather the Meegons are these meego dudes? That is one png image with them all on a transparent gackground so they will be easy to slice and dice as individuals.

You can have Optus sms you their apn settings via their site. Maybe you could find that page on the Optus site. I works for their resellers too.
I'd be surprised if it wasn't still listed under internet connections in settings. Mine remembers every connection I have ever had, including Macca's, GJ's etc. There might just be a setting change which needs clicking.

I tried that but couldn't get it to work. I ended up installing fAPN and adding the optus connection there. Strange thing, is that it only seems to work in 2G mode, not 3G (or 3.5G) mode any more...

Mine has disappeared as well but fMMS still works. Only thing I can think of is that MMS APN is no longer classed as a Internet connection (which was a real pain with auto-connect).
I sent a test message from my wife's iphone (on 3) to mine (TPG) and it came through fine. I was on wifi, so had wifi symbol and a mobile internet symbol (but with blue arrows) up near clock.

Happy.

Edit: MMS APN settings are not showing up in the phone's "Settings -> Internet Connections", but is setup in fMMS settings. Also I'm using the Havoc setting.
Just tried sending one and it worked (while on wifi).
I'll try on mobile internet later.

I have been chatting with Lehto privately (the first one to create overclock kernels for N900) and he now runs his at 1100Mhz fixed and noticed that it is much smoother than ever before. (as it doesn't need to scale back down to 250 or 500 speed etc)

So I tried it on my N900 today. Just fixed at 1000Mhz. It's either 0Mhz or 1000Mhz. Using xlv voltage profile with every other supported frequency is in the avoid list. What can I tell ya. It's smoother with less lag than ever before! I'm surprised how responsive my N900 became. I've watched an xvid avi file for like an hour straight and had zero issues still. (my phone never had issues at 1Ghz anyways)

So to those who want that extra responsiveness, try taking out the cpu frequency scaling altogether. (maybe even fixed at 600Mhz or 850Mhz if your phone can't do 1Ghz) I'll bet you will notice it being a little more responsive and lag free. I did. =)

0. Install an app called "leafpad" from HAM/FAM.
1. Overclock your N900 normally to what you always overclock to.
(will assume that the maximum is set to what you want as fixed)
2. launch xterminal
3. RUN: root
4. RUN: kernel-config min max (where min & max is the desired fixed frequency)
eg. kernel-config limits 1000 1000
4. RUN: kernel-config save my_fixed_oc (or to any other profile name you want)
5. RUN: leafpad /home/user/.kernel/my_fixed_oc
6. From leafpad, we need to edit FREQS line to only show 2 frequencies:
eg. FREQS="0:20,90 1000:60,500 "
(above example means it only allows 0Mhz or 1000Mhz. exact numbers may differ depending on which overclock profile u used. At the end, just ensure you have 2 values in there. 0 and max value you want.)
7. Save and close leafpad.
8. RUN: kernel-config load my_fixed_oc
9. RUN: kernel-config show
(it should show both min and max frequency with same value)
(it should show all other supported frequency in the "avoid frequency" lline)
(it should show only 2 frequencies you set in the "active frequencies" line)
10. You can now use "my_fixed_oc" profile with Queen Beecon Widget etc.

DONE. Now even if you make a phone call etc, it'll still always be locked to max. =)
(I wrote this to cater for beginners also but still with some assumed knowledge)

It will shorten your battery life. Guaranteed. By how much? No idea. Compared to default clocks, it may be around 5-15% shorter if you use your phone a lot. CPU isn't the biggest user of battery anyways. LCD screen uses much more. Also, when your N900 is idle with screen turned off and locked, it won't use any more than default either.

Also, when I was using min as 500Mhz, I used to idle at around 15-17% CPU with my LCD on and conky running. Now at 1000Mhz idle, it uses around 9% CPU instead. So it uses less CPU cycles than before. (it means that it gets things done quicker for idle processes. So it may not be using more power.)

Wouldn't 9% be the same as 18% @ 500MHz? It's probably using the same amount of cycles.

After a day of QBWing, I was wondering how others have setup to switch profiles.
Have setup 2 QBWs on the desktop – G(eneral) and S(ilent). This works OK, but 2 buttons seems cumbersome.
Has anyone made a button that toggles between General and Silent every time you push it?
Also – can you use the accelerometer to have a setting like the Desire where the profile switches to silent if you put the phone face down?

Have you actually overclocked your N900 before? My steps I wrote above will ONLY work if you have power kernel installed or are currently overclocking already. If you don't know what power kernel is, then it won't work until you know what it is and have it installed)

Guess my wording was off. Yes. It's same number of cycles no matter the frequency. Just can do them much faster hence there is less load on the cpu at any given time. It doesn't use less power however unless you can increase the frequency while using much less voltage. So at the end, higher frequency = more power usage. BUT, as said before CPU isn't the only thing affecting battery life. So the impact is much smaller than most think.

Anyways, I rather performance than battery life. Used it at 1GHz fixed all day today. It definitely feels faster. Especially during multitasking and having multiple MicroB sessions open. Now my N900 feels like a new phone. Just awesome.

Just checked on mine with 1.3 and not having any issues. Might have to reflash or something like that Conker....I heard you can reflash to 1.2 so you might want to check that out? But certainly mine is working without a problem, sorry to hear you're having issues.

For me re-installing kernel-power-modules helped. Provided you run it of course. Reboot and if still doesn't work post the last few lines from going to a terminal and typing 'dmesg'

On OC. I have got a lemon ;-) 850 in LV is the max stable for me.
I find the most reliable way to crash test OC is to jump around frantically in a video which only plays smoothly when overclocked. Crashes mine every time :-)

Starting to wish I had a spare microSD lying around to install NITDroid, would be great procrastination for exam study lol. Nah I'd love to play around inside Android and from what I hear it's responsive and pretty much as stable as one could hope for. I wish they'd made eMMC installations feasible with this update. I like this idea. I've written a proof-of-concept shell script which does exactly this. It polls the accelerometer every two seconds, and when it thinks it's face-down, switches to silent mode. In any other orientation, it will switch to the general profile if it's not already there.

Warning: This script is very rough around the edges, and probably should be done as some sort of daemon. It will also cause problems if you have something like SES changing your profiles at certain times.

To use: Copy the source below into a file called "shh.sh", and transfer to the '/home/user/' directory on your N900 using whatever means are available to you. Then, in the terminal, type:

chmod +x /home/user/shh.sh

To run, type:

/home/user/shh.sh &

To stop it running, type:

pkill shh.sh

I will revisit this later on, as there are plenty of ways I can improve on it (and it would be handy to set this up as a QBW with a single "on/off" button).

It's not really polling the accelerometer constantly (is it? – I assumed this is a file we're reading, but I guess it's possible that we're accessing the accelerometer directly...). The vast majority of the time, the script is sleeping, and I've verified using top that the script barely registers on the CPU (I saw it peak at 0.2% usage at one point). I doubt this will have a significant impact on battery life. I will test this out over the next day or so.

I think Python is better suited to this task than the shell: Great Gonzo's code is far more legible than the script I've posted. I did say it was just a proof-of-concept, but I didn't realise I'd been beaten to it by several months.

Once all these exams are out of the way I'm probably going to invest a significant chunk of my holiday in to trying to get somewhere with Python. From what I've discovered it seems to be a very powerful language.

Also as to power usage, I was under the impression the accelerometer was sleeping unless accessed, but I can certainly see what you mean as it is simply just accessing a file.

Let me start this question/suggestion by pointing out that I can barely code a "hello world" in php.
This script to check phone orientation to manage profiles is interesting and sounds like a cool idea. The idea that something is always checking if it should be on/off/change state all the time just sounds like something which would chew power.

As an "out there, just putting it on the table idea".... could this be a feasble and or a viable alternative.

I very much doubt this could be done with a shell script given its limited power. Perhaps with a full blown application, but then again a program sitting around waiting for a noise isn't any better than one checking a file :P

Turned on the phone this morning and the desktop clock, day-today and all the QBWs were all gone...
Desktop clock and day-today were easy to re-add, but the QBWs would have been a pain
After resigning myself to having to redo them, I went to add a QBW and one reappeared on the desktop in the correct spot. Then every time I went to add a QBW, another one would reappear. So for every desktop, I just kept adding QBWs until the generic one appeared and that restored them all.

That desktop crash is caused by a dodgey widget. So I'd be looking at the widgets you have added recently. If it happens again, remove them and add them back one at a time to isolate the culprit.

that used to happen to me a lot earlier on when I'd check out pretty much every new widget that came along. Yes, annoying, but as you say, they all remember their spot and each QBW has a unique ID so that is a good thing at least.

OMG. iPhone 3GS can now record videos at 1080x800@30fps@20Mbps now.
N900 has the same CPU and similar GPU and is much faster when overclocked.
I would love someone to get the N900 to record HD videos like the 3GS.

When I go to settings, theres a FM transmitter option, I tick the box in there and it says 'Unable to use FM Transmitter while headset or TV out cable is connected. Unplug cable to continue using FM transmitter'

No you couldn't. It's sort of the same as trying to add touch screen gameplay to a N64 emulator (something someone was expecting of the emulator we have). Really the burden falls on Gameloft (and other game makers) to add key mapping to the options, but as they were only expecting to develop for one device they haven't done that.

Perhaps if Gameloft finally comes to the party and spends one afternoon porting the games properly we will have that.

I imagine there could be a way to add an "overlay" on top of the game that "taps" the screen at that point when a key is pressed, but not only would that be a HUGE effort, I'm not so sure Maemo even has the power to do multi-touch (I believe MeeGo has full multitouch support however).

So for now I would imagine what we get is what we get. For what we get, however, it is a quite an acheivement. Games such as Asphalt 5, NFSU, Monopoly, Sims 3 and Driver (if not for the graphical glitches that some are experiencing) are all fully playable.

I asked this on the Maemo forums and was told it was possible by PreEnv's developer.

Well it has finally happened... my usb port has come loose (there may or may not have been a 1.5 year old involved in this).
Luckily the phone is just short of 6 months, which means that Allphones gets the pleasure of dealing with Nokia Care (it came with 6 months free insurance).

Wish me luck in getting my N900 back before Christmas.

I've spent a long time on this today.

The short answer is unfortunately, no, you can't receive orientation events when the screen is locked.

Rather frustratingly, the N900 does broadcast events for screen orientation changes, but only when:

1. at least one application has requested it
2. the screen is active

This would be the perfect solution to what we're trying to do, but unfortunately it looks like it's just not going to happen without changes to the kernel.

I decided to try and measure the battery drain when polling the accelerometer every 3 seconds. I wrote some Python to log the battery state every minute, and left the phone alone for an hour. I then repeated with the script running. Over that hour, there was no change in the battery charge level at all (as reported by DBus), so over the time I normally go between charges (max of 24 hours), I won't notice the difference.

I've decided I like this feature enough that I'm going to run it permanently. I've created an Upstart script to kick it all off when the phone boots. At some stage I'll try to get it all packaged up into a .deb so it's easy to install.

Lol I came to this conclusion once I actually realized the accelerometer wasn't being activated or anything, congratz on getting a cool feature, I don't think it interests me cause I'll often have my phone resting on something rather rough and having it rest upside down just terrifies me no end :P

While we are on the topic of battery, I've no idea what I've done, but all of a sudden I'm only getting 3-4 hours battery life from my phone. There's no runaway processes, no new widgets, no 3.5G constant polling, na-da. I feel I've had this happen before but I can't recall what fixed it.. other than I'm certain a reflash didn't.

Now on to another topic, I have a new challenge for anyone interested. Find a way to display on the desktop (possibly with QBW), a random item from this page:

EDIT: Got it working. I then can press another widget to open it in the browser. Through all my fancy tricks this was my downfall as I can't work out how to open MicroB from QBW (or terminal) so I'm stuck using Opera which is slow to load a single page...

I don't think you will gain much unless you have both browsers open at all times. I assume opera is your default browser. microb takes ages to load if not set as default browser. I can't remember how but my ovi store bookmark goes to microb no matter what default browser. Will investigate when I have a few minutes.

MicroB is my default. I'm using "opera site.com" to open as when I use "browser site.com" it errors out. I figure I'm missing something obvious...

My mate has a problem with this phone (though I think it's with his service provider).

Whenever anybody calls him, he doesn't get caller id. It's always unknown number. He's tried re-loading the software, updating, etc but it won't change.

I think it's a problem with the provider, like a service disabled with 3, rather than with the phone but he won't confirm it by trying a different simcard / phone. Instead he's planning to buy an android device and ditch his n900.

Is this a known bug with the n900 or is my theory probably right? He said he's enabled it in settings in maemo.

May be worth mentioning I wouldn't see a MeeGo device hitting the market (at least not a Nokia one) until February/March next year. And even then I wouldn't expect an Australian release.

As much as I love my N900, boy has it been hindered by Nokia. Best hardware in the world, worst at everything else... could almost be their slogan. Sad but I agree. N900 could be the best phone in the world even right now if they wanted it to be. Maemo5 OS is the closest mobile phone OS to what my dream OS is. I really hope they don't go backwards with MeeGo.

Have you tried the MeeGo builds at all? I gave it a 5minute go, then had to pull the battery as my phone call wouldn't end itself and got stuck on my home answering machine for 10 mins...

It really didn't have that familiar feel of Maemo, but who knows: Harmattan MeeGo UI may be a lot more familiar.

As for Maemo vs MeeGo, I'm still undecided. I think Nokia want an OS with a larger software catalogue; sure, they have Symbian, but that's starting to show its age and the N8 really does look disappointing loaded up with Symbian^3. I think they realised the need for an OS to go across multiple devices as opposed to persist with Maemo. But I think it's a sad day when the truest implementation of an open-source OS is replaced..

Fits the N900 perfectly and has a sewn in belt loop as well as a carabiner clip for attaching to a belt or belt loop. Also has a zippered front pocket that you can just squeeze business cards into.

I previously had a Noreve case which is a great case but its belt attachment system didn't work for me. I nearly lost my phone many times when it fell off the belt attachment.

Ok, guys I am about to release my first application. Maybe next week as I am going on holiday. I got fed up with how hard is it to create home widgets and really can't warm to beecons. So I have created a little application which lets you create qt quick home widgets. No compilation needed. At the moment there is a shell script which you can run to make the qml app a home screen widget. I might add a GUI application for this later. I'll post screenies when I get time.I need to package it up and document it. I'll upload the deb here for testing.
First one I tested was one which periodically updates a website view ;-)
I have only look at qt quick stuff for a week now and it is fantastic. You can even plug in existing javascript code.

New Fennec build is out and it is as fast as MicroB now. I prefer this to Opera and seems good enough to be MicroB alternative that's for sure. There is a thread about it in TMO and you can try out both Qt and GTK version. (I tried both and I prefer the GTK version as I had some issues with virtual keyboard on the Qt version)

I had an issue with the connectivity of mine which I seem to have resolved. Before it connected but was half disconnected (it would register a connection but would not allow data transfer – very annoying as my skype would look logged in but wasn't).

I'd suggest lowering your encryption and seeing if this is the root of your problem. I have now setup my wifi using WEP (instead of WPA-PSK) – not the best but fortunately my neighbours are all old and hopefully won't hack my wifi =)

I have no issue with WPA-PSK on my phone, but if you are stuck on WEP... why not enable MAC filtering? It's crackable as well, but no where near as easily as WEP.

On my device it takes twice as long as MicroB to open and 4 times as long as Opera. From launch to usable Opera is 6 seconds, Fennec was 23! I have version 4.02b.

The only thing I don't like about opera is the difficulty in using the quote feature of this forum. I'd love to know why fennec is so dog slow on my phoputer. I want it to work, it just bogs.

Launch time of Fennec maybe slower but there's really no need to close it once it is open. So have it always left open and then there really is no issue. (but I also do wish Fennec would be always "ready" like MicroB is)

btw, my Fennec opens and launches Google.com nearly as fast as MicroB. It takes around 10 seconds from the time I click on the shortcut to when google.com is fully loaded. (about 8 seconds for MicroB)

Make sure you are using Fennec 4.0 Beta3 not Beta2. (Beta3 is faster)

as a virgin fmms user, I just setup mms on the 900 and it was easy as pie. Install, check settings, send one , receive one all good.

I very much doubt it would, let me check.... Nope it doesn't. Orange LED flashes for half a second then nothing.

Search around, I got mine runnign by making every file in asphalt +rx
and making the owner user

basically goto the folder in terminal and run

chown user:root *
chmod +rx *

When starting from terminal did you use root? Yes? You shouldn't have and its stuffed up the permissions most likely.

In terminal (or your file manager) navigate to where your save file is and either delete it or change the permissions. If that doesn't help change permissions on game folder.

Ps. Don't give up Asphalt is probably the pick of the bunch to play. Make sure to change to control scheme to touch its sooo much better

We're real nerds, not wimpy iPhone users. Rice be damned! Remove battery. Get out your torx screwdriver set and disassemble phone. (Nokia PDF manual online). Shake well and dry with a cold gentle blower.
THEN package with proper desiccant gel. (We all keep those little bags that come with gadgets. Put in oven to dry them for repeat use.)
I have used alcohol before (metho) to soak gadgets. It removes the water and dries more quickly. But not sure there isn't anything in the n900 that will not like this.
P.S. salt water demands drastic urgent action. Rinse in fresh water ASAP!

I imagine he would be very satisfied with this phone. As is there is no announced successor to this phone and, in my opinion at least, it can't compete with the N900 as I love this phone. Chances are you'll see a successor Feb-March next year.

Go for the N900, for the price and greatness of the phone you won't regret it. If you're after a bargain they price of second hand N900's is bound to be very low given the timeline of the phone. Perhaps hit up eBay or keep an eye on this forum:

No issue here either, other than breaking 4 non-OEM chargers now :P I've now got 2 straight black and red cables soldered to a microUSB plug as I kept breaking the damned things.

... my point is the charger plugs keep breaking but the N900 port hasn't.

Are perfect examples of ways around it :P Top will enable power from a seperate device (I have an AC -> USB adapter lying around for example.), Bottom is powered and will allow multiple devices hooked to the N900 :P

Granted it adds more hardware, but it certainly shows there is ways around it.

EDIT: Those are just examples, especially wouldn't recommend that powered hub in particular.

uninstall any existing fmradio and python-gconf
sudo apt-get remove fmradio python-gconf
then using terminal
sudo apt-get install -y fmradio
it should install corect packages
it worked for me. if you dont have chroot installed or rootsh use
sudo gainroot and apt-get commands

I just uninstalled, rebooted and typed apt-get install -y fmradio

it installed the older fm radio app, not the latest date and seems to all work fine!

Ever since updating to 1.3 my dear n900 has been very trigger happy. When the phone is in offline mode it repeatedly asks whether I want to return to normal, same with connections If i've disconnected from the net. Every 5 seconds!!

I'm not having this issue, but I can take a stab at why. It'll usually offer to take you out of offline mode if you start the browser or phone application (I think.. phone is on charge in other room). So chances are you have a widget (or something) that's saying "I need internet" to which the phone is responding...

Have you tried a reboot? in case its just a runaway process?

Well I've had mild success. Managed to mount a keyboard, but the vboost script apparently times out after 32 seconds.. making it rather useless.

Managed to connect USB sticks and I can find it at /dev/sda1, but it won't mount. (at least before the vboost timeout..)

Haven't installed it yet myself but will soon. I think it won't affect my multiboot setup so I should be okay. (I want the ability to boot into power kernel for overclocking intact as I won't need USB host mode most of the time)

Sorry, I should have mentioned that I was only interested in outright purchase as I am switching to TPG mobile as soon as my Voda contract runs out.

Chargers generally aren't worth the effort on DX... as then you have to get a power adapter as well. Also this time of year.. DX is so ridiculously busy you'll be lucky to get it before Christmas (Had my package sitting at Hong Kong post for a week now.. they keep taking it off the plane :S)

As much as I hate to say it, eBay will be your best bet. Also (and I'm probably wrong on this) I believe all you want is a standard Li-Ion charger, and any with the 3 prongs should do the job.

You should get a universal li-ion charger if you do not have one already. They run off USB or mains (needs plug adapter), have movable pins, and automatic polarity. From $2 at DX.

New Trent have a sale on. With the current exchange rate, it's well worth looking at one of their external batteries. I bought an IMP 880E a few weeks ago – it works just fine on my N900 (although the Nokia charging cable doesn't work, you need a "dumb" cable, which they provide).

Only one I've tested is Teeworlds, but I am certain there are more (I know for a fact Quake 3 doesn't, however). I believe Quake 2 might, any of the old school open source games will, ScummVM should?

Quick Guide:
Alright there is now power kernel available with hostmode musb stuff, download:

Download those onto MyDocs of the phone, then install in terminal
dpkg -i * (it may error out if it installs in wrong order, just run it again)

Reboot

Then grab a USB stick, connect to fem-fem adapter, connect that to Nokia cable and plug into phone. Start h-e-n GUI and select High Speed, VBUS boost, enumerate and mount. As is it seems the GUI isn't properly mounting. So if this doesn't show up in File Manager, in xterm:
mount -t vfat /dev/sda1 /media/flash

And it should mount your USB :D

If you want to try out a keyboard and mouse (either/or):
Use Low Speed option, VBUS, enumerate and mount. Then give it a try out. Chances are this won't be enough.
apt-get install bt-hid-scripts

Adding a mouse cursor to the screen is now as simple as:
showmouse (hidemouse to remove it)
in xterm.

This'll also add functionality of the extra keys on a keyboard (numbers, arrow keys, /, \, etc etc).

Have fun!!

Also this should work with an external DVD drive if your feeling really adventurous, just will have to:
mount /dev/sr0 /media/flash
modprobe isofs
To mount it properly, may be opposite way round.. confusing myself a little (I believe, I haven't tested this... yet :D)

Lol :s I'd say your best bet is to find a mini-USB (or w/e its called) to female USB. Would cut out the middleman adapter.. but otherwise won't cut it down too much :S

Basically whenever I went to set an alarm i would always just make a new alarm since it involves fewer presses than editing an existing inactive alarm. Now I have at least a few hundred inactive alarms stored.

The clock app has been taking longer and longer to launch. Yesterday it actually took about 10 seconds to open up the clock up and I think this is what was slowing it down. Today I deleted probably about 60 or so alarms manually, and that cut down the launch time to about 7 seconds, but it was a very tedious process.

Wow that's awesome, didn't realize that was more than a 1:1 converter. I've actually got an old 2mm 6v car charger I could use with this (from memory it was rated to 1.6A . If I didn't think it'd take 6 months to arrive I'd order one (oh the wonders of DX around Christmas time..)

Ok I'm confused now. My point was I didn't realize the N800 used a different plug to the N900. I got mini and micro backwards I believe.

Have any brave souls installed the Power44 kernel? I am still at 40 – as the phone is rock solid atm with multiboot, NitDroid and lots of icon changes, looking for affirmation before installing...

You don't. Either find a 32 bit windows OS or use a linux live CD (a vmware of either will work also..). Then follow the guide to reflash here (doing both fiasco and emmc):

titan's power kernel is one thing which should not be upgraded whenever a new version is released on extras-devel. You should always check what the changelog is and what people at TMO have got to say about it before upgrading. Many people have had to reflash their kernel using a PC since the update to power kernel version 44. So I'm still on v42 and until u-boot and multiboot is sorted out, I'm not upgrading.

well i almost lost it then trying to flash the n900 didnt work out as easily as first thought.
when you have 2 64bit OS's in the house and one old ass 32 bit xp lappy things get hairy.
at start it didnt want to detect the device, drivers where not installed and things didnt happen, after a few reboots i finally got it working again one one wuestion remains.

what is fiasco?? i ran flasher 3.5 with the pr1.3 firmware. am i right to just need to flash eMMC?? that is the rootfs (256mb partition).
i have my n900 working although i am now running the backup (non updated power kernel) to restore all my apps and such.

I'm on latest and not had any issues. Granted I got rid of multiboot ages ago as it simply overcomplicated matters (especially since preenv makes Nitdroid redundant for me).

Been playing Duke Nukem with a usb mouse + accelerometer all afternoon, very enjoyable (except I can't map the mouse clicks in it :S)

Delete, delete, delete.
I don't think there is, but if you are looking for something in particular, the Scout Application works very well. You can search conversations, calendars and contacts.

Can't say there is anything. N900 was sort of the alignment of all the planets for me. Had all the hardware features I wanted in a phone and the EXCELLENT operating system was a bonus.

strange, i ran the flsher and did the eMMC only and it flashed all my apps away. but kept everything in my documents.
maybe i flashed it using one script BUT reading another script. ahh well im hoping its going to be all fixed, i did get a text, and got FB setup and thats reading right.

update;

well after some testing everything is well, did not install the power kernel for now, flashed to pr 1.3 with all apps reinstalled and working. dam i thought pr1.3 killed my n900.

Oh you bricked your N900 from kernel-power. You could have fixed it easily without flashing the rootfs :S

Just do this:
flasher-3.5 -F <firmware-image> --flash-only=kernel -f -R

Which will only flash the kernel. Heh coulda saved you a few hours of restoring backups...

I bricked my phone today too – combinations of accepting the upgraded Power Kernel and the multi-boot in the wrong order. Ended up in a loop with the boot screen and the u-boot kernel. Couldn't do anything to get out of it, except reflash 1.3 – luckily I had a backup from a couple of days ago.

Lesson learned – don't just click yes to all updates!

Just to be clear, you understand now you didn't have to do that? From your post I'm not so sure.

Using the 1.3 FIASCO image you can choose to only flash the kernel, this will change back any thing you may have done to screw the boot sequence, but won't effect rootfs.

I was going to just flash FIASCO, but could not get the handset to do anything but the loop – as soon as battery was inserted, loop would start. I tried Flasher almost out of curiosity and this interrupted the loop, so was happy enough to run a full reinstall.

Firstly avoid updating to extras-devel applications before they have been properly tested if your not sure how to recover. Have a look here for some fixes:

Theres nothing wrong with overclocking. Just don't install a package from extras-devel. Instead install v40 from extras which is far more stable.

captainbright had the same issue as i did. just loaded that up and a lil pic of lnux penguin. i did a flash and worked fine, i did a backup before i went pr1.3 and restored to that minus power kernel. i use to have my n900 OCed to 900 and sometimes up to 1150 but just to test which ran fine but im not running anything big just as yet to require that speed.
stock 250-600 is good for now.

You used:

Note the "--flash-only=kernel". Cause if you did it wouldn't have removed your applications or anything :S Would have been a much simpler fix.

Also theres nothing wrong with the overclock, just disable extras-devel (and testing) and install kernel-power. That'll install v40. Also if you no longer have multiboot installed (like I'm assuming you did when you updated) v44 should work fine.

extras-testing is fine btw. It will install v42 which has the new PR1.3 kernel updates, gets rid of the 500mhz lock bug and doesn't use u-boot or usb host mode patches. I use it and have zero issues. I'm not too keen on messing with multiboot atm so postponing v45 for now.

I keep randomly losing all system audio, calls, music, everything.

Haven't updated anything other than my own icon pack and I think pidgeon.
Anyone had this happen and fixed it?

Wow you've really foobarred something there to manage to make autoremover break stuff. I can only suggest installing all those dependencies manually but I'm not sure how that'll work as chances are they depend on each other.

Exact same thing happened to me ... before I got stuck in the u-boot kernel loop I mentioned earlier. Was extremely frustrating!

Thanks Jakiman. I have downloaded that 3 times now. Twice via computer and once via n900 and when it opens appman to install it show a package of 0kb and gives an error and won't install.

I have tried to manually remove those packages as autoremove won't do it. I think I am in some barney-rubble with this.
The thing is, I don't recall installing anything risky lately.

Don't install through appman. Install with dpkg. Eg.

dpkg -i /home/user/MyDocs/fcam.deb

Thanks again. Got it sorted.I might have sorted out the other packages too I think.
I'm going to keep extras-devel turned off for a while until my nerves settle down again.

i updated to 44 and that kernel was not compatible with the psfreedom payload i got, so i reinstalled stock kernel.

wanted to update back to 40 but only 44 is available from apps manager.

Glad it worked. If you already have v45 kernel, I guess you already upgraded it before. If it's all working, then there's no issues. So just re-enable the other repositories if needed.

Man. I would be shattered if I lost my N900. (no insurance here) I wold also buy it again without hesitation as it's the only phone that does some specific things no other phones can. (gawd, wish Nokia just made a N910 with same "awesome" Maemo5 OS, 512MB RAM, Hummingbird CPU/GPU, 4" LCD and HD video support. My dream phone right there!)

My phone just chucked a wobbly today, made a call ordered some pizza then i go back in 5 mins to look at my phone and its was off, tried charging it the orange light pulsated but no go, in the end i pulled the battery out and put it back works fine, came up with some system error and told me the kernel settings werent reloaded.

after much consideration i reloaded the old 40 power kernel and its going i thought it shat itself after a restart but it was just loading the kernel and away she went, jsut got her crusing along at 250-850 for now.
makes sims and nfsuc load that much quicker but everything is all stable.

this phone is like a brick....

it just survived a ~3m drop striaght onto the concrete, everything fell out, pen ,battery and cover, the only damage is a little scatch.

and shes still going strong(typing from her now)
