No way? that cannot be is australia we dont even have that fast of internet what country is that? you can quite happily have those figures no problem whilst sporting a 256/64 internet ADSL connection....how? easy stick a seed box on the end of your router in a DMZ and you'll get those numbers all day every day. remember others will be uploading to your box so as to seed right...nothing stopping you grabbing off your box which is sitting just outside your LAN. My new plan of attack is to buy a NAS with FTP or BT support support, and chuck an external hard drive on it. I currently use a seebox as it is impossible to maintain a good ratio with Australia's uploading speeds. Get the NAS to directly download from the seedbox, and just leave it on overnight to take up my offpeak allowance. Even with those horrible speeds, the limiting factor will be the data included, which at 80gb is enough for my needs. |

Lol whut? It's certainly very possible. Yeah, guess I phrased it wrong. From my experience (being stuck on ADSL 1 – max download speed of 150kbs and much worse for uploading) while using a laptop that runs so hot that if I left it on overnight I would find a nice round hole in my desk, it is hard to maintain a good ratio on private sites. |

Get a seedbox and compete with the EU countries. I'm on ADSL1 and I have a ratio of 3.7 on one of my trackers. My upload speed is only 256. Also some trackers offer seedbonus, you get points for just seeding, even if it's 0kbs. |

It's a pain knowing that I could be spending the same amount have internet that is like 5 times as quick with an extra 70gb. When are we gonna get 200 mbps connections and free/unlimited downloads? |

What is your standard download speed? I can easily crack full speed on mine (1.4 mb/s) that is with private trackers. |

Wow 400KB/s just seems slow these days. I often max out at ~1.8MB/s with private tracker... :D |

don't understand how they can charge for upload as well as download.. think about sending an email with some attachements essentially 2 people are being charged for the sending of data from point a to point b...in my mind that doesn't make any sense. If you send a letter in the mail – the sender pays for the postage, the reciever doesn't pay... |

Im pretrty new at this, but it this pretty fast fot a torrent??? Thread title needs burying/correcting, and even when it reads 400KB/s, it's still only half of what a 8000/384 line (available everywhere ADSL is) will do. Decent tracker, "well seeded" torrent, and torrent-software that's not been messed-with too much. If you send a letter in the mail – the sender pays for the postage, the reciever doesn't pay... There are many places in the world where both ends of a phone-call get charged. That & your examples don't relate to the problem though. It's all being counted against the one customer. You pay to download it, and pay to send it... Which is a dirty practice. The only time I can accept why they do it, to kick torrent users off. That I can understand, and never use that ISP ;) |

That's still making the mistake of KB to Kb (or kbps). The difference is 8x, so it's important you know what you're writing. Assuming you're on 1500/256, you should be getting ~155KB/s (1240kbps) with zero difficulty. You're currently telling us your record is 10KB/s, usually getting 3.75KB/s. That's normal dial-up speeds ;) Connection – Speed – Time To Download 700MB If you can't reach those speeds, something's wrong. Either your connection or (usually) software, or where you're connecting to. With torrents, it usually means a public tracker, and people with crap connections. 8000 and ADSL2 connections all depend on what speed your modem "syncs" at. For example, we had 8000 syncing at ~7500 and got more than 700KB/s. We changed to ADSL2+ and it's syncing at 10,800 giving us 1100KB/s. |

Kb and KB. Small b refers to bits, big B refers to bytes. 8 bits in a byte. |

The problem with BT is the reliance on seeds and peers. Unfortunately I've had to load up a torrent (first time in a while) because the files I'm looking for are not on Usenet (server based downloading). Considering what ppl commonly download on BT (Apps,Movies,Games) is almost certainly on Usenet I can't get my head around why ppl still bother with this method of sourcing goods. (My torrent is lectures that were hosted on BBC but not anymore). |
